Default Incessant whining hasn't gotten the Raps anywhere

Quote:
“We haven’t been getting calls all year, and we let frustration set in,” Casey said. “We can’t let that happen.”

“You can’t blame the ref. Maybe they don’t see it. But we’re definitely getting fouled,” Gay said.
Maybe Gay is new to this. He didn’t seem so afterward, bristling angrily at the suggestion he was being baited into slagging the refs.

Telfair might have the same excuse. He didn’t stick around to talk. While his teammates showered, he was already sitting on the bus.

But this isn’t a surprise to anyone who’s played in the NBA. Bad teams don’t get calls. It’s not fair. It just is.

At this point, the Raptors are presumably trying to make some impression on officials. Presuming further, they would like the benefit of the doubt going forward.

Incessant on-court whining hasn’t gotten them anywhere. They’re at this night after night, running at officials during timeouts, pouting dramatically after every call. It’s gotten tedious and, more to the point, counter-productive.

And their solution is to double-down on that approach? Smart.

Every team whines. It's league wide, no bigger whiners than some of the top teams. Hell, PP last night whined and made gestures to the refs everytime he went to the rim. The problem is shitty teams whining falls on mostly deaf ears.

That's fucking laughable, the NBA could be so much better if shitty teams didn't have to outplay good teams by such a large margin to even have a CHANCE at winning the game, it might even bring out more competition on a nightly basis. Is there any other sport that gives the refs so much control over the outcome of a game?

Jumpshooting teams don't get calls. And that exactly what the Raps are and pretty much always have been.... a jumpshooting team.

meh, old news, stars get calls, rookies and stiffs dont. winning teams get calls, losers dont.

always been like that, it maximizes revenues on chosen stars and markets.

it only changes when you draft a superstar

If you don't get the call, you shut your trap and keep making the same play, and then the calls will start going your way. Ref's not making calls can't be allowed to intimidate your play.

I don't blame the Raps. At least it shows they care.

I love Rudy's death stare. He acts as if the ref made some sort of grave mistake lol. Get your ass back on D!

I am really starting to dislike how Lowry acts after every time he gets a foul. He is playing aggressive defense and sometimes I think is trying even too much to get his hands on the ball so its clear that he will get some fouls. But he seems to disagree with every call. I mean its ok to disagree sometimes but any positive effect of trying to influence the refs is taken away when you complain all the time.

Still the 5th foul (where Telfair got his tech) last night was pretty bullshit considering that for two possessions his defender had done the exactly same thing to him (or actually even worse as they reached with hands, Lowry just bumped with body).

For most part I think many of the raps have been able to tone down on complaining. DD for example is complaining much less than he used to. Amir and JVal complain very little when you consider how many bad calls go against them.

Lowry, AA and sometimes Gay tend to complain way too much.

There are two elements to foul-calling in basketball which are far more important than the actual interpretation of the rule book. IMO, they are the reason that "winning teams" tend to get the call. It's not reputation nearly as much as it is simply that the "winning teams" really are better basketball teams.

1. Good basketball plays vs. bad basketball plays.

If you make a bad basketball play and there is contact - there is a good chance you're not going to get the foul call. This is why Rudy Gay often doesn't get calls. He's making bad plays. This is also why Demar wasn't getting calls at the start of the year, he was forcing shots when he had easy dump-offs to the bigs. When Demar passes more, he gets more calls when he shoots. More often then not, officials don't award players for crashing into the key and drawing contact when their are three defenders set up and two wide open teammates

2. Optics. Good technique vs. bad technique

It's what the play looks like, not whether their is actual contact or not. Using good technique vs. bad technique should often get you the benefit of the doubt on the basketball court.

Ways for bad teams to overcome this beyond actually playing good basketball.

1. Don't whine
2. Be the aggresor.
