Default I dont get it...

How come the Raptors are practically out of cap after signing turk when last year we had AT LEAST $65 million cap of players? I just dont get why we only get like $55 million this year. I no we had 65 mil last year because i used to check out the Raptors salaries on hoopshype.com all the time for the 08-09 season. Is it because of the economy or did we have more to spend or were we in luxury tax last season and do we still have our MLE after signing turk? I just dont get it; someone please explain!

Yeah I'm confused too. Seems like every team has a crap load of money to spend except us. What did we get in the Kapono trade? Just Evans??

I think you are confusing cap with luxery tax level. Cap space is less than the luxery tax, and its the cap that determines all these factors you are talking about.

The Raptors last year were over the cap, but just barely under the luxery tax.

The "cap" is a number that is based on a percentage of an average of teams' earnings throughout the NBA so the recession has played a big part in the cap going down.

The luxury tax is a number that is a percentage higher than the cap, if your team payroll goes over that amount they are going to have to pay a dolar for dollar tax on it to the NBA.

A team that is over the cap can only sign player with the MLE or LLE and its own free agents/rookies. That is how teams get over the cap and tax levels.

Cap and Luxury Tax levels are due out this week I think for 2009-10.

2008-09
Cap was roughly $58 Million
Luxury tax was roughly $71 Million

Almost all the teams are over Cap. While a team is over cap they can NOT sign free agents other then through the use of various exceptions (ex. Hedo), the largest being the MLE which will be around $5.8Mil. They CAN sign their own free agents if they maintain rights to them (ex. Marion, Parker). While they maintain rights to players their salary is estimated at a high amount and counts towards the teams cap for determining if they are eligible to sign free agents (ex. Parkers cap hold is $9.1 Mil even though he made around $5 Mil last season) . If the team chooses they can revoke their rights to players (ex Marion, Parker).

The Raptors status
7 players signed for 2009-10 for $45.5 Mil.
9 players they have rights to totalling about another $46 Mil.

Total is approx $91.5 Mil which puts them well above the $58 Mil cap so they are unable to sign free agents except through various exceptions like the MLE ($5.8 Mil) unless they drop their rights to various players (ex Joey Graham).

For Tax determinations it's only the players signed that count so the Raptors have about ($71Mil - $45Mil = $26 Mil) to spend on their own players and on free agents using the exceptions.

One other thing. If a team at any time drops below cap level they lose the right to use the MLE that year. Rather then lose the MLE, teams keep holding rights to players you never expect to use (ex. Pape Sow $1.5Mil).

What i don't understand is that if we give Turk 10.5 mill this year, we would still be under the cap by like 1mill., can't we still use the mle?

The more I think of this deal the less I like it I honestly think it's too much money especially for 5 years.

great point! thanks for bringing this up. i just noticed it now.

Lakers were able to sign Artest.
Detroit were able to sign Gordon (55mil) and CV (35mil)
Magic were able to trade to get VC
Boston are have an offer sheet for Rasheed

we're fortunate to get Hedo but this one signing alone reduces our spare change to zero when these other teams have a hell of a payroll? what the hell is going on?

is it because we are tied down to alot of bad contracts (banks etc) on players that are pine riders at best if not inactivers. hmmm i think BC is trying his hardest but hes gonna have to pull something spesh out of the bag on this one.

they don't help. if BC had that extra cash he could add a bench player or 2.

it's an exception to the cap limit that allows teams to sign 1 or more players with contracts adding up to approx 5.8Mil even though the team us over cap. they lose this exception if they go under cap limit.

Their are other cap exceptions but the MLE is the highest amount a team can offer to a player.
