Great interview. Love what he says when it comes to getting everyone on the same page and accountability.

If you're going to praise his knowledge, you can't pick and choose... I'd say that he probably has been around Triano often and knows he is a good coach.

It was a good interview... hope the same messages are being preached here.

I can pick and choose what i agree with no? If he has respect for Jay as a coach (which i didn't hear) then i disagree. If he likes him as a person and as a nice guy and is rooting for him, then good for him.

Jeff, the hard part is that you yourself know very little about Hoops, thats why it's difficult to support your opinion about Triano's ability.

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly makes him a bad coach to the eyes of many.

I think he's a good basketball coach and is still learning how to manage personalities which is the biggest thing an NBA head coach needs to learn.

I just hope he can make the hard decisions. So far in his career he has avoided them more than anything. There have been signs that he has it in him though.

I'd prefer Hubie. But then I'd take Hubie over just about anybody. And he's likely a little too old, so that doesn't mean a heck of a lot.

I wonder if some of that has to do with young egos though. It's a fine line.

And Hubie was great in Memphis with a young team if I recall correctly.

It's a fine line - yes, but necessary if you are going to "enforce" accountability as Hubie says. The scary part is there is no turning back, because consistency is a must.

And Hubie did good with the young Grizzlies, but eventually had half the team wearing headbands in protest during the playoffs. I think he could have been trying to make too many guys happy the same way Triano seems to too often. Eventually somebody has to be allowed to be a little disgruntled. It's impossible to be entirely fair across the whole team. Somebody is not going to fit for whatever reason beyond their control.

Triano's next big test is going to come with Reggie. Should Reggie get any minutes at this point? I would think it might be best to say no. You could try to force 5-10 minutes a night for him, but does that help him or anyone else? It's not an easy decision, and you can't say it's what's fair according to what he's done in the past, but it's the job of a coach to make some shitty decisions at some point, and to communicate his reasoning well-enough to make it work in the long run.

The Heat completely destroyed the zone in when they last played in Miami to start the second quarter.

Fine...so Jay is going to surprise them with the same zone 3 minutes before the first quarter ends.

Miami shreds it again.

3 minutes left in the second quarter.. same thing.

Fourth quarter, why not, do it again. Miami only gets a good look every time they see it.

You don't surprise one of the best teams in basketball by playing zone. That shit might of surprised Lebron and Wade back when they were 5 feet tall. I know Jay probably had this all planned out two days ago but good coaches in the NBA improvise on the fly. Something Jay desperately struggles with.

And Bargnani is lighting it up with a few minutes to go and he puts Jerryd "HERO" Bayless on the court who promptly forces the issue in transition...

....Triano is a hard worker and a nice guy.

I have to vent on Triano.

He may be respected by coaches, maybe by players.
But his is 50% fault why we suck defensively. Doesn't utilize matchups, doesn't hold players accountable and reverts to zone too much. Switching on screens all the time, whats up with that?
Weems fails against strong SFs, could do wonders against PG and SGs
Demar is stubbornly kept defending SG, while he could literally lock down big SFs.
Calderon is a fighter, but just not good enough to trust him defend every PnR
Bargnani DOES NOT NEED THAT MANY MINUTES. He doesn't even want them. Unless there is a really favorable matchup he can utilize every time down the floor, rest him more.
Wright is benched... your best wing defender

Trey Johnson? Why do we need to give him minutes? Weems and Barbosa are back, no?

You know wins produced stat? I bet Triano is worse than Bargnani in that.

Being a hard worker and a nice guy might be enough given time. Triano is as fresh as his roster. He needs to grow as an NBA head coach as much as anyone on the court needs to grow as an NBA player.

He has his players' ears and respect and he seems very motivated and as long as he has that drive he can succeed as demonstrated by his current position.

But he has to give up on the pre-conceived gimmicks. He has to chill out and learn to let the players coach themselves a bit. He has a fascination with going to two point guards at the end of games (losing or winning), and his use of zone surprises his own team as often as it does the other team. Often lacking any purpose other than "switching it up". I've also never seen a coach take away so many opportunities in transition with over-anxious timeout requests.

this isn't basketball summer camp for 5th graders. these guys are nba professionals that basically ball is there life.
in my opinion we cannot accurately judge triano as a coach until we have a good team.
a coaches job at this level is to put his players in the best position to succeed. thats basically what it comes down to. so coaches with good players have it easier as they have way more room for error

Problem is Triano was taught by Sam Mitchell. He won hearts of players by trying to not be like Mitchell, but other than that he doesn't know better.

Taught by Sam Mitchell? He was here before Sam Mitchell and was not new to coaching when he came to Toronto.
