How would you fix the Raptors?

The title says it all, how would you fix the Raptors?

This is my formula:
-Fire BC
-Hire an assistant GM from San Antonio or OKC or something
-Play this season through, possibly make some small moves, lose pick to OKC
-Trade Bargs, DeMar, Amir, etc. for picks or other good young prospects
-TANKTANKTANKTANK
-?????
-PROFIT!!!!!
-Andrew Wiggins
-Re-sign Lowry

Lowry/Ross/Wiggins/Ed/Val

Good game Miami.

Bargn88 11-11-2012 10:01 PM

1)Package Calderon and Ed Davis for a SF that can score and play defence.
2) Trade for a backup PG that is pass first, or get one through other means.
3) Get rid of Lucas

Lowry
Derozan
SF
Bargnani
Val

jeffb 11-11-2012 10:18 PM

Lowry/Vet//Lucas
Derozan/Ross/Fields
Gay/Anderson/Kleiza
Davis/K. Martin/Acy
Valanciunas/Amir/Gray

Get rid of Bargnani/Calderon, get a 3rd team involved and do everything possible to get Gay here then sign K-Mart. Doesn't fix them completely but it's a start. Imo the Bargs & Calderon era needs to end.

So vague, so very, very vague...

There is no quick fix for this situation. There needs to be a new house built, not renovations to the old crappy one

My take is the right move after firing BC or his contract running out, is trading Lowry and Bargnani and going full tank-tard in the 2014 draft, which is expected to be 2003/2008 level stacked. No, it's not the popular move sentimentally to trade Lowry when he's playing like this. But when a player has high value, it's for a reason. We only look to trade players when their value has plummeted for us and everyone else

For eg. let's say we trade Lowry and Fields to Utah for their 2 1sts (UTH 1st, GSW 1st). They can make that deal because they have plenty of capspace next summer. Utah gets a franchise PG instead of adding two rookies they can't give minutes to (they can't even fit Burks and Kanter in the rotation as is). TOR gets something like the 12th and 15th picks in the draft, enough to move up to the same spot we'd have been picking if not making the Lowry trade if we want, and puts themselves in a great cap position for the new GM. We rebuild around Derozan, Ross, Valanciunas, those 2 rookies, Davis, whatever we get for Bargnani, and go for the #1 pick in 2014 when anyone picking in the top 5-7 will get a star talent. With 4-5 lottery picks on our team, if we followed that up by drafting a talent like Wiggins, Parker, Harrison, Hezonja, etc., we could turn around quickly having drafted a new franchise player but with lots of talent around him as well

me fix raptors? that's unpossible!

Trade Ed Davis for Rudy Gay.... Raptors fixed. In my opinion, the era of undersized frontcourt players needs to end.

It's going to take a lot more than that to land Gay

I'm not going to speculate on how to fix the Raps during this season, but assuming nothing major changes before the end of the season, here's what I'd start doing after the last game of the regular season:

1. Let BC go, replace him with Stefanski in the interim, perhaps permanently.

2. Fire Casey (or demote him to Defensive Assistant Coach) and the assistant coaches, and hire one of SVG, JVG, D'Antoni, Mike Brown, Nate McMillan or Brian Shaw. If it is at all possible, hire more than one as an assistant to whoever is HC.

3. Sign Jose to a much, much more reasonable contract (I don't see him getting traded, pretty much ever).

4. Trade some combination of Ross, Ed, Amir and Jose for any player who is a quality starter on a championship team (preferably not a PG), or a starter and and the sixth man of playoff team.

5. Throw the max at Josh Smith and Al Jefferson (or something a little below the max for Paul Millsap). Also see if Stephen Jackson can be had without paying an arm and a leg.

6. Get Magloire to sit on the bench next year, whether or not he's officially a coach.

7. See if any international stars are worth giving small contracts to, because they have to be better than McGuire and Lucas, and probably Anderson and Gray too.

8. If none of these roster changes come together, trade Bargnani, Lowry, Jose and DeRozan for as many lottery picks/high ceiling lottery rookies/sophomores as possible. Put out a line-up of Rookie/Ross/Fields/Davis/Valanciunas. Maybe generate some interest by getting AI to play point.

9. Tanks for three years with what would be a bottom 5 team. Draft the BPA every time and make draft day trades if there's a positional jam. Add one more mediocre year to see how the newest rookies pan-out. Trade the next first-rounder and any rookies who haven't fully panned out for someone near all-star calibre at whatever position is still lacking. Take on whatever all-star calibre player has the worst contract.

= playoffs for 3-5 years, 1 ECF appearance

Lather, rinse, repeat. :cookie:

neojiphre 11-12-2012 12:34 AM

trade bargnani and calderon

finstock 11-12-2012 01:37 AM

BC has this team situated between a rock and a hard place. We can't win because we have crappy players, and we can't tank because we have no draft pick. Oh yeah, did I mention those crappy players are on bloated contracts? So yeah, he's gotta go. And no, Rudy Gay won't win me over. Every good BC move is accompanied by several head scratchers. So, naturally, the next domino to fall would be signing Jose to the max.

Bargn88 11-12-2012 01:37 AM

Firing Casey is the wrong move IMO.

We made amazing strides last year defensively in a shortened season with limited practise time. We competed with good teams because of our defence, missing our best offensive player for a majority of the season.

Now we have 3 new starters incoorporated into the starting lineup, a really crap bench (No bayless and Barbosa to give us that spark when the starters need a breather), and we lost James Johnson who was arguably our best defender. (stupid move by BC, who then go's and throws big money at Fields)

Injuries and BC's idiocy have made it difficult for Casey.

I think the ship will turn around, and this is contigent on 2 things:

1)Lowrie and the rest of the starters developping good chemistry
2)The defence getting back to what it was last year.

This is a juicy discussion for us Toronto Raptors fans and let me start by saying, this is NOeasy fix.

1. Keep all coaching staff/management and Evaluate them after the 2012/13 season. If Toronto finishes amongst the three worst teams in the NBA and lands OKC the #2 or #3 draft pick, clean house. If the Raptors finish worse than 10th in the Eastern Conference,do not extend Bryan Colangelo's contract. Otherwise keep Dwayne Casey and his coaching staff. Fire Maurizio Gherardini immediately regardless of any outcome.

2. Put Andrea Bargnani on the trade block, include a prospect like Terrence Ross and/or Ed Davis in a package deal. If possible, mask a bad contract as well like Linas Kleiza's or Landry Fields, along with a second round pick. Trade Jose Calderon around the deadline when his contract is less expensive and when title contending teams could use him for a deep playoff run. Pursue a decent SF/SG or even PF. I'm thinking PF Paul Millsapp (then resign him) and SF Marvin Williams from Utah as a reasonable acquisition, but aim big for a player like Rudy Gay. If not, pursue Harrison Barnes in Golden State and David Lee.

3. For now,cut the rotation to 9 man (10 if emergency). Keep the opening day starting line up,except demote Fields to the bench for Kleiza and Bargnani for Amir Johnson. Utilize Bargnani effectively as a 6th man (sort of like Manu Ginobili,Jason Terry in Dallas,Harden in OKC) who gets starter minutes if he's having a good game offensively. Let Calderon, Davis,Fields,Bargnani (Ross) operate as the 9 man rotation players off the bench. Eliminate the two point guard system.

numbah eleven 11-12-2012 02:49 AM

Don't fire Casey, trade Jose and Bargs, and anyone else who plays like sh*t.

Metallikid 11-12-2012 02:55 AM

Bargn88: He's the only player who I think would give us a discount and if her were on, let's say, a mid-level exception-esque contract he'd actually be a good permanent back-up and small trade asset.

CommunistCrunch: How about an actual argument?

fancylad 11-12-2012 06:57 AM

i couldn't tell you how to fix the raptors, but i have a pretty good idea of how prevent a team from getting to the state the raptors are currently in. Step 1 don't give out massively inflated contracts all the fucking time. step 2. draft for talent at all times. step 3. don't trade away first round draft picks.

LX 11-12-2012 09:06 AM

Pound the fucking rock.

I know it didn't work too well for Landry Fields, but this is no time to just give up. That rock is going to crumble any day now.
