Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki compared Tyson Chandler's defensive impact on the team to how Kevin Garnett instantly transformed the Boston Celtics into a defensive machine, and the stats bear him out.

"I don't think Ray [Allen] or Paul Pierce were great defenders before K.G. got there," Nowitzki said. "But, K.G., with his energy, his defense, his mentality and his high-octane self, he kind of changed the whole momentum on the defense. I think that's what Tyson did here."

It sucks, but at the very least Calderon is playing better as of late.

because we could've gotten him and diaw (both great impact players) in the past summer

Chandler & Marion.... 2 guys who would have been PERFECT fits alongside Bosh (and Bargs now).

Yeah... pretty much sucks.

Funny how they're both with Mavericks too

Chandler with Dirk is working wonders with Dallas, even with Kidd throwing Chandler alley oops.

It hurts that Chandler could have been with us. I wasn't high on Diaw, but Chandler!

Jose
Derozan
Kleiza
Bargnani
Chandler

Pretty good starting 5!

I'm happy for Dallas though, I hope they go far in the playoffs and win a championship with Dirk!

Chandler has injury liabilities, but is good when healthy. I respect his integrity and professionalism in how he approaches the game.

Wasn't Jose in the deal for Chandler?

Hey, the best you could do is think about how positive the impact of Jose and Reggie have been this season. I actually think we could get more out of those two than Chandler and Diaw. Jose's been playing more and more like his old self, racking up the assists, and Reggie is arguably a better rebounder than Chandler(whether he rips it out of teammate's hands or not). We could use a Chandler right now, but Diaw is just a slow fatass that wouldn't fit in. We have enough PF's and he would probably struggle to catch up with the likes of Bayless, Barbosa, Derozan, Calderon etc.

Reggie had the same impact on players on the floor. Bringing a defensive energy. I am sure if we looked at points against when reggie played versus when he didnt. We would see a discrepency.

Not even close. Chandler brings DEFENSE. Reggie brings REBOUNDING. Subtle difference with HUGE implications. Both are needs of ours, but defense is the thing that puts you on the path to a championship. Rebounding is what good teams do, but you need more than that.

Chandler is a 7'1 center who in 27 minutes averages 9 points, 9 boards, 1.3 blocks on 67% shooting (pretty much all dunks). More than the blocks is the shots he contests due to his massive height and length. Having a guy like Chandler causes guards to have to re-think their drives to the basket and causes a lot of bad shots because of his length. At times and in stretches his defense can be game changing.

Evans is a 6'7 1/2" power forward who, in an identical 27 minutes was averaging 4 points, 12 boards, 0.2 blocks (1.3 steals) on 36% shooting. Having a guy like Evans hurts you a little bit on offense where he's a nonfactor, but gives you an extra 2-4 possessions a night with his otherworldly rebounding. His defense doesn't change the game, but his rebounding can initiate runs for his team because it causes some posessions to be "one-and-done" for the other team, and sometimes forces the other team to foul him (causing a turnover or at least a foul) because he's going to box you out on almost every possession.
----------

Notice the difference? Evans doesn't protect the paint or need to be covered anything but passively on offense. Just keep him off the glass. He can't create his own shot and isn't big enough to finish strong in traffic.

Tyson is a defensive intimidator who also needs to be coverd on O because if you sag too far off of him, he'll simply role to the basket and get a lob for an alley oop (which he converts at a league-leading rate).
--------

I'd say comparing Tyson to KG is a stretch - one is an all-time NBA great, the other is simply a good to very good player. Still, with that said, we'd be looking VERY good right now with Chandler and Bargnani starting at PF and C (interchangeable depending on matchup).

You're right: the Raptors got outscored when he was on the floor by a greater margin than when he was off of it. He's a liability on the offensive end; on the defensive end, he's too slow for 4s and too small for 5s.

This team would undoubtedly be better with Chandler now, though whether that sort of mid-step rebuild (again) would've been a good idea over the long-term is a matter of some debate.
