In Doug Smiths blog today he talked about the inconsistent bench for the Raptors and getting a clear view of who the top 10 players are and the 11-15 players need to know their 11-15 (not thinking they deserve more minutes ALA Juan Dixon). He says he needs to hit a couple out of the park and a couple smaller moves as he remakes a third of his roster!

I blame the inconsistency of our bench last season mainly because of all the injuries that occured meaning 2nd unit players had to fill in and start more often than expected. This meant forcing players back and forth from starting to the bench and vice versa. That affects our cohesiveness ten fold and had we not suffered through the injuries I think our bench would of been fine and remained one of our strong suits like its been for over the last couple seasons. I don't think there's much tweaking that needs to be done with our bench this season other than replacing 1 or 2 and adding another 1 or 2 new players.

Our issue is strengthening our mediocre starting 5 in my opinion. That's where we're hurting the most in my opinion. Not our bench. JMO

The way i see it, we're one good trade from being content fans.
and i am really hoping that will come in the form of the TJ trade which should net us a improvement or two in our roster.

I don't think any of us are expecting to be conference favorites or anyhting, but i do want us to take that step from being a lower rank / borderline playoff team into a team which is top 5 in the East.

Depending on what we get for TJ (or Calderon), i think it could happen. We weren't great last year, but we weren't bad either.

I want one big trade (TJ) and a small move or two to round things out. I don't think that's a lot to expect.

But I guess the way Doug puts its, we'd likely be adding more than just 1 or 2 new players, meaning we could have a very different looking team next season.

Garbo? Gone.

The Gangster? Gone as soon as his contract expires.

Carlos? Could very well be gone if he gets a good free-agency offer.

T.J.? I’d say it’s 80-20 he’s gone in a trade?

And for a team that only had 14 guys on the roster at the end of the season, you’re looking at the possibility of five new faces, a third of the roster changing from one season to the next.

And with the prospects still around for a two-for-one or even three-for-one trade involving a package for Ford and someone making large money, there could be even more turnaround.

A good thing?

Not sure.
Will definitely be interesting.

Was chatting with an old friend and a couple of grunts while standing outside at halftime of Game 6 getting some fresh air and the old friend makes a call and hands me his cell phone.

Bad reception I thought, or someone in a very crowded spot who could be barely heard above the din.

After 10 or 12 seconds, it hits me:

It’s Oak!

Yes, the one and only. He was hanging at the Garden in New York, or some restaurant, or some social function or some concert (I couldn’t make that part out). Says he’s doing fine, thinks he’ll be in Torontosometime in July (“I’m just rolling like always,” he said).

One thing that did come out: “Tell Sam I said hi, tell Bryan to get him some players.”

Boys we need to forget about a "BIG" move this summer, Ford isn't going to bring us something amazing, unless a Babcock is on the other end of a move.

BC's plan is clearly set out for next season, He expects Bargnani to be develop into a contributor by next season, he's going to draft a swing player, who after a year of playing behind Moon will be able to make a contribution, and he's going to use the expiring contract money (Rasho, Parker, and no Garbo against cap) on bringing in a very good SG, he'll use his MLE this year on a banger.

BC just wanted to hold us over until 2009-2010, got lucky and we won the atlantic, than expectations went through the roof, Bryan isn't going to do anything that will mess up his 2009-10 plan...at least thats my take

I hope he brings in Jay Williams for another look. With TJ pretty much gone, I'm not so confident about the idea of bringing Roko Ukic over and expecting him to hit the floor running.

I agree his plan is to have flexibility after next season. But i do think a Ford deal will get us a banger or secondary scorer and i also think something will happen with our draft pick, possibly trading it and getting into the top 10 which could happen with a T.J ford trade depending on who their trade partner is!

clearly that's the master plan - but don't forget that we can achieve similar results this summer by using expiring contracts in trades, as opposed to goiing after free agents. Of course, that's only if the right deal comes along.

Once we have our starting lineup and big pieces into place, and if it appears we're at contending stage, the bench spots are easier to fill. There'll always be solid veteran ring-hunters if that's ever the case. That's not saying those bench players aren't extremely important, I think guys like Posey or Payton in the Heat year were essential to their victories, but they're easier to get.
