Hockey in my perspective is one of the most boring sports to watch from my perspective. Yes, I still cheer for my Habs, but still, if I'm watching a hockey game for the sake of it, I need to be incredibly bored.

Regular season hockey, I tend to agree with you CG, but there's nothing like playoff hockey. The intensity of two teams that want to kill one another isn't seen anywhere else in professional sports. OK, maybe MMA, but the speed and excitement of hockey during this time of year in my opinion (from a Canadian) perspective) isn't comparable to any other sport.

I tend to agree with you, but then again, I'll only watch a playoff game if my team is in it. If not, I tend to lose my passion and I'd much rather watch a basketball game (any league) or a soccer match ahead of it.

Theres basically also no strategy involved in hockey besides on defence but all the teams play the same way on defence so thats negated. Its basically who makes a mistake first in terms of penalties or going for the puck on offence when you shoulda went back on d and thats how goals are created. There isnt nearly as much action(besides hitting but I'm not one to get excited over hitting someone into the boards unless its huge) and i dont think that can make up for what you see in basketball nearly every play. The dump and chase and the zone d ruined hockey IMO. No more crisp passes that lead to breaks, not as many chances etc etc. If there isnt a lot of good offence in the hockey games IMO it gets into the golf and curling category.

You've never played at a high level have you?

Thats nuts...

I perfer watching basketball to hockey...and am more passionate about the Raps than any other team...but playing the sport...its not even close...hockey hands down...and its because of the strategy.

Ask, Shane Corson, Claude Lemuix, Esa Tikkanin....its why in hockey playoffs the forth line matters...

Theres strategy involved on offence in hockey? Really? Defensively teams basically do the same thing from what i've seen, and on offence its just go with the flow, no?

I was always a fan even when I wasn't.

I was a fan in the Vince-era but was in Camby during the tough times - all they show there is football (soccer), cricket and the occasional Laker game - its just not my bag.

Hockey Strategies

Run & Gun - mostly for the better 1st/2nd liners, create odd man rushes using speed
Passing Plays - pretty much self explanatory
Neutral zone trap - again, self explanatory
Hit & Grind - mostly for bigger 3rd/4th liners, check them and grab the loose puck after
Dump & Chase - self explanatory

Also there are about 6 other strategies, for PP, PK and D

Thats so silly and oversimplistic. That is what its like "midget" (meaning the age group not the little people) hockey. Thriller, I'm not going to list a punch of plays, but the defrence is in basketball you have set plays, in hockey not so much except on the PP. There is however an overall game strategy, and while it may not be noticed to the casual fan it is there trust me, its why the same coaches keep winnnig.

Oh my.

Glad Benzo beat me to that.

Hockey isn't complicated.

Christ, you need to have at least a level 3 coaching certificate just to coach an Atom AA team. Basketball coaches for kids as old as 17-18 inmany cases have no qualifications at all!!!! (hence why most kids plying hockey are way more developed at younger ages, and why the age debate is different for the draft in the NHL). Face it, we treat hockey like science up in Canada, the emphasis and attention is matche donly by maybe baseball and foot ball.

There is so much stretegy in hockey it isn't funny. It's every bit the same as basketball. I got to play a nice level of both so I can tell you from experience. Being able to execute in Hockey is what seperates Jr. Players from professionals.

I have no problem with guys liking hoops better, I like um both, but lets not be silly here.

The only thing I see in Hockey is a much tighter team concept, and a greater emphasis put on the entire team as more players have responsibility in hockey as more play. You can turn an NBA franchise around over a summer with 2-3 new guys. In the NHL it takes a lot longer than that.

Anyhow, my point is this, and was from the start. To laugh at the leafs, because they missed the playoffs is a joke. The NBA in my opinion is not as competitive from top to bottom as the NHL. And if we can't agree on that, then we can say the East in the NHL is more competitive than the East in the NBA. The Dino's are in the show, and they are below .500, the leafs had a better record and missed.

You had me up untill this paragraph...the facts the the LEAFS missed the playoffs is a JOKE, they have been so horribly mismanaged its laughable. The NBA in the west is every bit as competeative as the NHL.

AND THE LEAFS WERE NOT 500..NOT EVEN CLOSE

The biggest difference between hockey and basketball is one allows goaltending and one doesn't.

The West alone is more compettitive than the NHL. OTTAWA made the playoffs and they fucking suck. How is the East any good if the fucking Senators made it?
