Default How Do You Fix T.J.?

As Doug talks about in his blog today, we need to fix Ford and fix him quickly because he is becoming a distraction to this team right now. So, with that being said, can we discuss what are some feasible ideas on we can fix Ford to the point where he can be effective again?

I'm not looking for "trade his fuckin' ass" or "bench that fuckin' baby" responses, but maybe a reasonable discussion on how it can be fixed because like it or not T.J.'s apart of this team and will be an important factor for at least the remainder of this season.

Any suggestions?

Talked to a couple of guys on the way out, coaches and players, and the feeling was theyíve got to get T.J. right, somehow. Quickly.

My opinion? Heís not handling being a backup well and I think he knows heís a second stringer for as long as he remains in Toronto. Heís hurt, his emotional state isnít good and he doesnít know how to handle it. The explosion at the ref had as much to do with the last two weeks as it did the preceding five minutes.

This is going to be the biggest challenge of Sam Mitchellís coaching career, heís got to get to T.J. and make him understand they need him to be steady, not spectacular, not a one-man show. Who knows if Samís up to it.

Maybe last night was indeed rock bottom, I know listening to T.J. right after the game he knew what heíd done, felt bad and Iím sure heís hurting today.

But this is what it is: he has to play some, he has to play better or this seasonís gonna degenerate into a mess of biblical proportions.

Itís not too late to salvage something (one scout I talked to on the trip figures these guys come home, win a bunch of games in April, finish sixth, beat Orlando in the first round) but time is running out.

Itís on the coach and T.J.ís teammates to get to him.

The easiest way for TJ to be happy again would be to start. But to reward him for these actions and degrade Jose would be shameful for basketball and would make Mitchell and BC look INCREDIBLY weak.

I think the best cure is time. He'll get used to this eventually... I hope. Right now what Sam needs to do is start Jose every damn 4th quarter. TJ may pout at first, but he's a backup, and with his 4th quarter play he hasn't deserved to get that role. In the first 3 quarters of games, he's been good lately. Kapono's finally starting to get it going, he still needs to figure something out with Delfino, but I'd prefer it if Carlos is starting soon anyways.

I don't know what can be done, but they better figure it out before the playoffs. I will absolutely destroy my television if we're in crunch time and possessions are getting thrown away like old shoes.

Quite honestly, if Jose really doesn't care about starting and TJ does, then fine, put it back to the way it used to be. Play TJ 10 minutes and Jose the rest. I'd take that solution right now.

The hard thing is you've got to make a guy with a propensity for injury, with a lot of cake coming his way and a serious 'tude problem attractive to someone.

Not sure how you do it now. I think the easiest thing Sam coulda done is given TJ his starting job back the game he looked 'back'... on account of him not losing his starting job to injury but it's too late for that. I think for Sam to put TJ starting now its' gotta come from Jose, privately and publicly.

You show faith in him as a person and ride out his bad times.

Dude is going through a hard time.

Period.

On and off the hardwood I'd imagine.

I think a lot of guys on here are incredibly callous to what he'd been through, and with rumours that he has personal issues, I think compassion is maybe a good route.

Yes. Thats right. Superjudge says love TJ.

horford's "swat heard round the world" remains the low moment for the season. everything went downhill from there.

i dont know how you fix the guy. my question is what the fuck is john lucas doing? isnt he like tj's special advisor? maybe we should as kas over at ebs...

For the money that he is making he should know how to play on and off the court, Did Jose ever complain about minutes played on the court? No, as matter of fact the only thing that he really care is about the team winning. Period....if he play 2, 10, 20minutes who cares, and again Tj for the money that he is making he should be adapting his game to the team, no the other way around, and if he doesn't want to do it, bench him, we were fine without him, Jose didn't learn how to play yesterday or five months ago or even three years ago, that's why the Raptors hire him, he came with a small contact, a full tractor trailer of humbleness, and with true professionalism ON and OFF the court, just the opposite of Tj. Cheer your teammates when you are in the bench, just for a change, that's why you are getting paid to do, that's what a professional teamplayer does day in and day out.....................

Start TJ, but play Jose longer.

Jose was a great spark off the bench back in the day. Jose is also a team player, so I'm sure it doesn't matter to him who starts, but in the end of the day they must play Jose longer and develop him for the future, where he can be a consistent starting PG.

And I think we've seen the best TJ has to offer - he can't grow any better, or there is a slim chance of that. His ego gets in the way. But Jose has the ability to just get better and better, so we must play him longer.

couldnt agree more.
i know i've been hating on TJ, but the kid is so full of potential its crazy.
i think that may be one of the key reasons he pisses me off so much; the fact that he can be so damn good if he just got his shit together.
he is IMHO (and the opinion of the majority of players in the league) the fastest PG in the NBA. he has such an arsenal of offensive moves and weapons that make him such a threat to other teams, he can beat you off the dribble, crossover, shoot, drive the lane... he can do so much... yet that may be his downfall. in his head he's unstoppable, in his head he's the greatest player in the league... and he lashes out, he cant be calmed down, he tries to do too much...
fact is, i think he's a little crazy.

its a shame really... skill-wise i truly think he could be a bonafide top 5 pg... but mentally, he isnt even top 100.

Agree with MVP, SWAN and SJ.

TJ has been playing a long time with the starters, so he knows them better than the benchers IMO. He would not have to change the game that this year had showed before the last injury.

Give TJ the first quarter and Calde the fourth, and all the world happy.

Well, I hope I'm wrong. Let me just qualify what I meant...

His skills are great, no doubt. He already has the skills to be a bonafide PG. But his mental attitude toward the game of team basketball is not yet where it should be.

If it doesn't change now/soon it's very unlikely we will see any improvement during his tenure with the Raps, maybe not with the current coaching regime. I'm sure TJ, like most/many players, plays mostly on instincts and emotion. It could be just like Kobe where it took some years before he realized he needed to get his teammates going, to be able to go far into the playoffs.

His injury may have cost him the starting spot, but it shouldn't have affected his mental attitude towards team play. If he had it and understood that concept before (the injury), it shouldn't be any different now. So, saying his injury is the cause of this mental obstacle is just a cop-out which I don't believe it to be. But I can understand his emotions have gotten the better part of him, having to compete for the starting spot - which is an entirely different excuse, and has no room in a game when we are trying to win it.
