Default How did you first become a Raptors fan?

Since we have people from all walks of life and from so many corners of the globe, I thought it'd be interesting to tell some stories about how we became fans.

When the league announced that Toronto was going to be awarded an NBA team, I jumped on it immediately. I was a Blue Jays and Argos fan, hated the Leafs, and was ecstatic that we'd get a basketball team.

I went to the draft held in Toronto when we picked Damon Stoudamire and everyone booed. It felt like the start of something magical. I haven't looked back since.

I was a huge fan of Showtime growing up, loved the Knicks of the early 90's, but after the first tip off in November of '95 I was hooked. Which is weird because I am not a fan of any other Toronto sports teams.

In 2001, I got a pair of tickets from a friend who couldn't attend that game and I was contaminated by the ACC euphoria. I played professional soccer for 8 years back in Europe, after I moved in Canada (in 2000), I had to embrace something popular here and I don't like that much hockey, NFL is not that strong here, so the obvious choice was Raptors. I rarely miss a game and usually I go to 10 games/season to ACC + 1 or 2 games in playoffs (last two years I couldn't go to more as Raptors went home early).

Actually only watched to Bulls up to that point after Jordans first retirement. After thant I had an interest in the Raps(being a canuck and all) but when MJ came back the first time I had to go back to the Bulls. Only after he retired time 2, did I switch to full on Raps fan.....although the red and black of the bulls stills holds a little sentimentality.

I used to love the Bulls and Jazz. Then a local team came here and as a 12 year old I was hooked. Bought the initial fan guide looked up all the players and away we went.

You do know the Raps hadn't even played a game yet when he retired and came back the first time.

I had been a fan of the Charlotte Hornets prior to the Raptors. It was the drafting of Damon that got me excited about the Raps. I had seen Damon play a bit and most of that booing crowd had not. The fact the Raps drafted him made the choice to leave my Hornets behind and support Damon and the Raps. I likely would have become fan regardless but that pushed me in the Raptors direction

I stopped watching basketball when I was like sixteen. I love Iversons Sixers in that time. I followed the Spurs every now and then. Then, when my favourite player Mr. Garbajosa joined the Raptors I slowly started watching the NBA again, by the end of the 06-07 season I was huge Raptors fan. I have watched pretty much every game since then.

I've always been a sports fan. I like everything minus American football. When the raps were brought into the NBA, i was in high school and although i wasn't a rabid basketball fan at the time, i enjoyed having a home team to cheer for. Went to my first live game at the dome in the second year of the franchise, and slowly as the raps developed more of an identity, my love affair with the team grew. it's just become part of my life.

I was always a Sonics fan growing up, absolutely loved GP to Shawn Kemp, Hersey Hawkins, Sam Perkins, Ricky Pierce, eddie Johnson and Nate Mcmillan to name a few. Throw Detlef Schrempf in there too. Loved the sonics until GP left, Jesus Shuttlesworth came, but it just wasnt the same. Right around then I got into fantasy sports which ruined the notion of favorite teams for me. I started cheering for individuals instead of teams. So the Raps arent even really my favorite team. You could say they are my favorite by default. I'm a basketball fan.

I moved to Canada in 2001 and started watching Raptors ball with a couple of the guys in the dorm. I have always loved playing basketball, but didn't know that Toronto had a team until I came here. Cheering them on was my way of embracing my new home country, and I haven't waivered since.

I was a Sixers fan growing up, but much like lang I dropped everything when it was announced that Toronto would be getting an NBA franchise.

But I still miss the old "Thump & Bump" days with Barkley and Mahorn back in their hay day.

I was a die-hard Knicks fan growing up (still have a soft spot for them too), but once we got the franchise, my allegiances quickly switched.

i started watching basketball when it was all about showtime. after they feel apart, i started cheering for the spurs (huge david robinson fan).

as soon as zeke was named the general manager here, i got pretty excited for the raps and started following them just as much as the spurs...the rest belongs to local coverage, otherwise i really doubt i'd be a fan.

I was a huge Rockets fan back in the Dream days. They got old. Raptors got Vince, I saw the game against Orlando in his rookie season. Later I downloaded all his dunks and the next season I became Raptors fan. And here I am, made a bunch of friends trough the message boards and stuff... still like it.
