Hoopsworld-Is The Toronto Raptors Season Already Over?

Quote:

The Toronto Raptors were going to be playoffs contenders this season. No guarantees, but the additions of Kyle Lowry from Houston and restricted free agent Landry Fields from New York together with a healthy Andrea Bargnani, an improving DeMar DeRozan and the highly touted rookie center Jonas Valanciunas seemed like more than enough to have Toronto fighting for a playoff spot in April.

A minor bump in the road during saw Lowry and Valanciunas both miss some time in training camp and preseason, but the Raptors went 6-1 in seven preseason games and looked like they had developed a measure of team chemistry heading into the season. That unfortunately proved to be something on an illusion.

With a record of 4-14 and in the midst of a five game western road trip that has four games remaining, whispers about the Raptors season being over before it even truly gets going are becoming louder.

“Our record is pretty bad,” Andrea Bargnani said. “Everybody is frustrated. We have to try and get some wins. That is all we care about. We are right there, but being right there doesn’t mean anything. We just have to try and win because nobody is going to help us from the outside. We just have to do it ourselves. We just have to win, that’s it. There is not much to say.”

The Raptors were facing a tough start to the season. In their first 18 games, 12 teams were in the playoffs last season and Toronto has already played 11 games on the road. That will be 15 away games out of their first 22 contests by the time they return from the current road trip. And, it’s not like the Raptors haven’t competed. They were within three points at the end of regulation in six of their losses including two losses at home in overtime to go with two single-point losses on the road. The fiasco of a refereeing error in Charlotte that cost them a game really stung.

Good, i don't want to tank. Make some moves, add a bonified SF and if we want to, aquire a pick next summer. Fuck tanking.

I'd love to see us make a huge trade... Dec 15 can't come soon enough... I actually think we signed Landry knowing that D'Antoni was getting the job after the inevitable firing of Mike Brown. If this is so, pure genius. I even think Torap realized this a long time ago and understands the need to hype up Landry as a trade is a brewing!

Well as we know easier said then done.

if we are going to tank, blow it up completely, trade everyone for picks and expirings, keep Demar, Ed, JV, Ross, maybe Amir, maybe lowry. Stink it up next year and get wiggins, and go from there.

Lowry/kobongo
demar/ross
wiggins
Ed
JV

That BC pic made me laugh but to answer the HWH question no,they aren't mathematically or realistically finished. There's 60 games left,so their aim should be to finish 40-20,resulting in a 44-38 record which may be enough to sneak into the playoffs,if not give OKC a worse pick then desired. They need to win games like tonight's vs the Kings.

The season is definitely over.

We're 10 games under .500, and probably will slip even more over the next couple of weeks.

40-20 is hugely unrealistic for this group.

EggsToTheBBQ 12-05-2012 02:21 PM

It's definitely time to tank.

Unfortunately, the NBA system rewards teams that do very badly.

Like it or not, long term the team will be better off if they have a fire sale and get serious about rebuilding.

Yea and lebron will be injured when we play them in the conference finals and durant and westbrook will be out also in the finals that year and we will win it all in wiggins first year. Please, this will never happen.

jeffb 12-05-2012 02:23 PM

Wiggins will be a bust

I'm pretty sure he means we will have to play way above .500 to get back into anywhere for atleast 10 games which will not happen.

Mehh, if we can stay around ten games under .500, then when the schedule eases up if we have a mini 5 game win streak we're right there for 8th. We're currently 5 games back of 8th. Not saying it's going to happen, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

DDUnreal 12-05-2012 02:30 PM

Horray the raptors are living within the realm of possibility. Maybe I'll make a thread about this.

It is but it isn't

If you look at the record 4-18,you think yea they're done.

But when you dig deeper, only a third of those games were one sided or bad losses. If they fix some of their problems and learn how to finish games they'll get twice as many wins because this group has shown that they could bang with the best of them. 40-20 is just an aim though, 36-24/35-25 is more likely than that. Also,I base that on the assumption that they'll make a trade that improves their roster.

Do it quick, someone will beat you to it. lol

zapffe 12-05-2012 02:37 PM

I think it's too early to tell. they definitely have a shot at the 8th spot. They need to achieve 36-26 to make it to .500.

Given they played 12 playoff teams and 11 road games, not to mention 6 close games, we can achieve 36-26. But games like tonight's are must win.

The main problem I see is players are demoralized just like this forum. It really comes down to how well Casey and his staff help them regain confidence and enthusiasm to play.
