Raptors Hoopsworld: Reasons the raptors make the playoffs

Quote:
Coach Casey has changed the teamís culture and in a lockout shortened season, the Raptors surrendered the ninth-fewest points allowed at 94, while holding teams to the leagueís eighth-lowest field goal percentage

Lowry represents a significant upgrade over Jose Calderon defensively and as impressive as James Johnsonís defensive statistics were last season, when Casey replaced him with D-League call-up Alan Anderson, the Raptorsí defense didnít miss a beat. Anderson is back and Fields will be an upgrade defensively at small forward.
Quote:
Last season was the first time in a decade that the Raptors averaged more boards than their opponents and they did it without a dominate rebounder on the team
Quote:
Bargnani averaged 5.6 free throw attempts per game last year and could have made up half the discrepancy in attempts on his own if he had played the full season, plus Lowry averaged 2.9 more attempts per game than Calderon

I'm tellin' you, ya'll got 2 spots opening up in those playoffs. The Magic are rebuilding, they'll want to tank. And I think Philly's not gonna be there. We'll see why the Lakers desperately wanted to trade Bynum for Howard. Because Bynum stinks.

I don't know how some people are saying Philly will challenge the Heat in the ECF and how everyone is saying they are a top-4 East team. Other than Bynum and Holiday there isn't much else there. They'll probably make the playoffs, but other than that they shouldn't make much else noise. I think the Raptors can take the season series against them if we have a full squad.

Raptors will not make the playoffs Our division has 5 playoffs worthy teams, but just because they are in same division it makes it hard for them to go thru
I dont see how boston, new york or brooklyn stay out of top8, so we either have to beat Philadelphia and hope for bad records in other divisions or we end up last in atlantic with good record and hope for a bigger miracle in other divisions.

He points to the free throw differential without pointing out that it represented a weakness within what he wants to consider a strength - the defense. Yes they cut scoring down dramatically, but they still didn't get stops like a team in the top half of the league defensively. Lowry will definitely help solidify the defense so that so many fouls aren't needed to cover up for poor perimeter coverage, but at the same time Valančiūnas will likely be prone to foul, and the interior defense in general is still a question mark.

This six reasons they make the playoffs stuff is goofy. It's not like there s a checklist, with most items getting checked off due to Andrea being expected to play a full season, and Lowry expected to provide improvements over Calderon. There are many interdependent factors that they will be aiming to firm up in ways they feel will give them the best chance. My feeling is that a mark of success for this team will come in the form of being able to see all of that more clearly anyways, in terms of who and what works and doesn't work. Then it's going to be up to Colangelo to make the right move(s). They could still fight for a playoff spot along the way, but not through simplistic formulations and homeristic wishings.

i believe this season will be another learning year with all the new pieces we've added so by '13-'14 season, we should be playoff contenders

I think we contend for the playoffs this season. Whether we make it in is up in the air but baring major injuries we should be right there. And teams like Brooklyn, Philadelphia are a significant injury away from sucking imo. And who knows how Chicago will do without Rose for 50-60 games. Every year it seems a team or two tend to disapoint and a couple surprise. We'll see, should be an interesting season. For us, a good start to the season is key.

So you're saying the Raptors are better than the sixers or the Raptors are going to finish near dead last?
