Default Hoopsworld: More T.J. of Jose To The Clippers Rumours

Obviously Hoopsworld is a couple days behind the Jose news.

Anyhow, more Ford or Calderon for Maggette talk today.

The Clippers are no different, and have been linked to talks regarding both of the Raptors' point guards.

Last week we heard that the Clippers had interest in Ford, and might be willing to work a deal to send Corey Maggette to Toronto in trade. One way or the other it sounds like Maggette is leaving town, and as many as six NBA teams inquired about him last summer and again at the trade deadline. He brings a wide array of skills and would look good next to Calderon and make life easier for Chris Bosh with his ability to create a shot from anywhere. Now, however, the LA Times is reporting that the Clippers might prefer to make a run at Calderon.

Calderon is a restricted free agent, but both he and the Raptors have been open about their intention to re-marry as soon as players can be signed in July. The Clippers would have to make him a pretty impressive deal to get him away from the Raptors, who can ultimately offer him more under the CBA. It seems much more likely that the Clippers make a deal for Ford, but we'll continue to follow this story as it evolves.

Question is, who are the Clips gonna give up for Ford now that Maggette opted out?

Because he's opted out Hoops, is it now too late for the Clips to do a sign and trade if they wanted too with Maggette?

Thanks Mike ... I wasn't too sure about the logistics after some chooses to opt out of their final year.

If it's Ford for Maggette, count me in. Even if it's Ford and Graham for Mags, that would be cool, but definitely NOT Calderon for Maggette.

I agree not a maggette fan, but he's a wing scorer which we need, than can focus the draft on a banger, maybe pick up either a veteran big, or PG in free agency, and call it an offseason

It never ends. Thanks hoopsworld. Here's what I figure. BC is going to go after Maggette, knowing that it will screw up the team, and then he will be able to fire Sam as he wanted to all along. Just figured I'd be the first to come up with that one.

If they want Calderon, we want Maggette+Thornton
Otherwise it's Maggette for Ford. S&T.

I'd do Ford for Maggette for sure, I mean I'm not a huge Maggette fan, but I'm less of a Ford fan and it'd give us a nice 2nd scorer. And not every Raptor has to be squeaky clean.

So once Sam is fired for us to be safe then, will that mean we'll only sign Maggette to a one year deal just so we don't have to suffer with him on the injury list of years on end?

Ugh. Maggette. I guess it makes sense - injury prone player for injury prone player.

Mags is 4 years older, plays 60-70 games a year, is a free agent, has only made the playoffs once and otherwise played for shitty teams, and is completely one dimensional and totally alergic to D. He will no longer have a player of Brand's caliber to protect the paint behind him (kind of like last season, where they sucked).

But, with all that said, he's a second reliable scorer - something we sorely need. He's a scorer from the wing position - something we desparately need. Him and Bosh both earn their living at the line, which puts the other team in foul trouble, which is a good thing. They both drive a lot, which creates space for other teammates as defenders need to double team them, collapse on their drives, etc.

If Mags can be signed for a reasonable deal, like 7-8 million per season for 4 years, I'd definitely endorse the trade, as it addresses one of our fundamental weaknesses (perimeter scoring, and a second reliable scorer behind Bosh) if otherwise ignoring our glaring defensive weakness.
