Hoopsworld: Marion wants a ring

Marion Wants A Ring

Shawn Marion's free agency has been the subject of protracted discussion this summer, and expect that discussion to continue to grow as teams start to look beyond the draft in a couple of weeks. Toronto Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo recently told HOOPSWORLD that he's confident the Raptors and the Marion camp will be able to come to an agreement that keeps Marion in town. As for Marion, after ten years in the league, he's focused on winning a championship.

"Right now, I gotta weigh every option that's possible for me to put me in a situation to succeed," Marion said in an interview with Hardcore Sports on Sirius Radio. "I gotta look at every situation point by point in terms of what I want to do, what I can bring to that team, where I can help in that situation. Also, you gotta realize, I finished my tenth season in the league. I do want to win a ring before I'm done playing. You know, I want to see what's my best opportunity and what's my best chance to do that."

That's precisely what teammate Chris Bosh has been saying in response to the many questions about his contract, which could be extended this summer but likely won't be. Like Marion, Bosh wants to make sure he's committing the foreseeable future to a team that will win consistently and be in a position to compete for a title. It's widely believed that keep Marion is the key to eventually re-signing Bosh.

"Chris is cool, man," says Marion. "He came out for my birthday party, I came out for his stuff. We support each other, he's a great teammate, hell of a player. As far as weighing his options out, he's in a different position than I am. I'm finishing up my tenth season, he's probably finishing up his sixth season. I can't really sit here and talk about his situation 'cause I'm not in the room with him or having the same conversations he's having with everybody else, but all I can do is wish the man luck and wish everybody else luck. You never know what can happen."

The Raptors are hoping that the relationship between Bosh and Marion will continue to be a close one . . .in proximity, that is. The ideal summer for the Raps would be to re-ink Marion early and spend the rest of the offseason tweaking the supporting cast.
Does he think he can achieve that here?

Here? No, but if we know one thing about Marion, he's all about money first. The only team that might take a chance in a sign and trade might be San Antonio with perhaps Oberto and Roger Mason Jr coming here.

I would want Splitter
I heard that Orberto has surgery

and Marion won't get his ring, unless he takes a pay cut on a contender

It's just one of the things that he's weighing. I don't see him taking a paycut like a vet on his last season or two might do. I'd guess that he will look at teams with good things showing on the horizon, and that's a tough guessing game. I really think that all the parts of his game can be made use of fully here, and that he's going to find that alluring.
