Hoopsworld: Was Extending Bargnani the Right Thing to do?

Both players have been rewarded with eight-figure annual salaries for five years (starting next season) which, in this economic climate, might very well be overpaying.

Might be underpaying as well.

As Wii Superfan would say "Helllllll Yeah"!

Only one valid answer: YES.
Any signing came with risks (injury, player wants out, player declines and so on). Except injury case, I do not see any other problems with Andrea. He is working hard to improve his game, he is the only one starter that showed up in game shape in training camp and his defensive game looks much better. To play low ball with somebody like Andrea because of the current economy situation is not helping for long run. He may be in two years by now a $15MIL+/year player and then nobody will see this current signing as a bad one, but as a steal.
The current economic crisis is a big opportunity for corporates to cut salaries and benefits, still the top executives gets big bonuses and the corporates will start soon to have huge profits without even thinking to increase back the salaries or benefits to employee.

Bargnani may even be a better deal than Aldridge since he's versatile and can play the 4 and the 5 (though he's really ideally a PF). Bargs is getting $10M/year for 5 years, while Aldridge is getting $13M/year for 5 years. In a couple years, Bargs may be the better deal - we'll see.

I agree with you except that Bargs is ideally a four. You want your four to be a monster on the boards. You want your five to be a legit 7' stud that can defend against other bigs in the post. Bargs fits this. Leave the rebounding and help defence to an athletic four... could be Bosh if he decides to play some defence.

I'd rather have AB playing at the 5 spot he has been doing well so far at the position....

Having Bosh grab more rebounds would help this team more than him spending more energy on offence....& if he doesn't do that I'm sure he will be moved this year....I would like to see Bosh average more than 12 boards per game if you ask me...
