Hoopsworld: Colangelo not ready to deal yet

Quote:
"We've talked about (trades) as well, but it's only been a quarter of the season, minus a pretty significant piece like we've talked about, and we've seen enough that it makes us wonder if it might be too early to do something as far as a significant trade. Minor trades, you can always tweak and look to do things, but there have been no significant conversations. The fact that we got off to a less than stellar start has prompted the phone to ring a little bit more. ... I think it's probably more prudent to take the cautious approach. We've got to give it more time, let it come together, hope that Reggie comes back sooner rather than later, and see what the team looks like and how it reacts to his presence. We also need the guys who were brought in to play more consistently and bring more energy night in and night out. Then we'll be sure of what we have. For now it's hard to know what we have. We've seen good things from this group, but we haven't seen it consistently enough. There's no more pressure today than there was at the beginning of the season, and there's no more urgency right now. You always want to improve your team, constantly looking at ways to make your team better, and our less than stellar performance has prompted more interest from other teams who are trying to determine if we are willing to make a move. That can stimulate conversation and cause some activity, but there's no additional pressure to do that right now. I want to win every basketball game we play."

I am baffled by the presumption that Reggie is going to save this team. How many Minutes is he really going to play? Is he really going to be that inspired to play D for this team when they are 10 - 12 games below .500. I don't know.

As far as trades go, I think a new coach should be given a shot with this roster before its blown up.

Save the team? Where the hell did he say that? He said he's an important piece and it's hurt the team that he hasn't been healthy. Which i agree with. But at the same time i don't know what kind of difference he'd make. A little yes, much more probably not.

Sorry didn't intend to be taken so literally. Its just a lot of people not just BC have been hyping his return. Reggie's attitude would have gone along way out of the gate. But coming in to a struggling team, i am a little skeptical of his ability to be that guy.

Would people really prefer to see Reggie on the floor over Amir? Amir has been one of the few bright spots for me this year. Wouldn't mind seeing him locked up for a few more years.

I'm not sure. I like Amir's input as well but he's not a big intimidating defensive presence. Don't know if Evans is but, sometimes when Pops plays I like what I see from him and think that's more what this team lacks than the hustle Amir provides. Not that Raps don't need that but I guess I'd like him to do that from the 4 more or even 3. Amir/Bosh or Amir/Bargnani doesn't impress me much I guess, particularly on D. Cause Amir is superb on the offensive boards.

I think Raptor fans are going to be really unimpressed with Reggie Evans. He's not going to turn this team around and although he's very physical he still doesn't provide much in terms of shot blocking or a presence at the rim. I'll take Amir over Reggie any day of the week.

How abuot a coaching change? Letting a good team go to waste

Colangelo is a smart man... Thank goodness the panickers on this site aren't responsible for anything.... The problem with Amir is he is not physical enough yet, though he does a great job... but this team needs to be a little more physical on defense... It's the perimeter defence letting this team down, trying to help inside but accomplishing nothing, scattering back to the arc and accomplishing nothing... It's like Parker and Moon haven't left on defense... though we have upgraded tremendously at their positions...

I get tired of watching guys go off without ever getting hit hard. We need some agitator who is willing... I think Colangelo knows having Evans in there even for 5 minute stretches can help take teams out of the offensive surges that every team seems to get against us... especially guys like Anthony Johnson and JJ Redick... If a guy is going to foul, make sure you foul hard... at least it makes them think twice next time... other shooters have no doubt in their heads about getting touched or blocked against us...

I would be happy with a coaching change, bring in an actual defense first coach. Reggie would make a huge difference as well, at least with him there can be some lane intimidation.

Van Gundy, Porter, Frank, Izzo, Patino (not that either would leave the NCAA). Any one with experience winning as coach or a player.
