Hoopsworld: Biggest sleeper team

Dealing a first-round pick for Lowry was a steal for Toronto. It may have been the most underrated acquisition of the summer. Lowry was exceptional last year, playing at an All-Star level for the Houston Rockets prior to missing games due to a bacterial infection. Hes one of the best defensive point guards in the league. On the offensive end, hes improving as a shooter and hell make his teammates much better with his excellent court vision. Hes also great at drawing fouls and hes statistically the best rebounding point guard in the league. Lowry is a difference maker. Not to mention, hes already emerging as a leader in Toronto, which the Raptors desperately needed.

.The Raptors are much better with Lowry running the team and they still have Jose Calderon, who will either be an exceptional sixth man or an attractive trade chip that Toronto can move for another contributor prior to the trade deadline.

If Andrea Bargnani and DeMar DeRozan can take the next step in their development, Toronto should be able to grab the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. Bargnani showed glimpses of brilliance last year and, if he can stay healthy, he seems poised for a breakout season. DeRozan regressed last season, but hes expected to step up and produce in a contract year.

The Raptors are flying under the radar entering the season, but they could end up being the biggest sleeper in the league. They have plenty of talent and if they can mesh under head coach Dwane Casey, this team should be able to exceed expectations and make the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08. Alex Kennedy

Just not falling asleep during games will be a big plus for me.

I agree completely about Lowry. I tended to prefer Lawson over him, but now I'm not sure about that. I'm just so glad this happened. I never understood how the Houston trade was plan B, but I'm just so relieved that it ended up happening.

Agreed ... If we can continue with progress made last year on the defensive end and establish a decent offensive flow and rotation ... we certainly can be the sleeper this year. This year is critical to truly seeing if we are on path to creating a culture or just a one year experiment.

I believe we are on the right path .. does BC have the patience .. hope so ..

Would be nice to be competitive and think about playoffs and getting free agent key pieces vs the NBA draft being are only salvation.

Those are a couple of big IFs ...Lowry will certainly light a fire and help Raps play more up tempo. Which is what they need to do because as perimeter shooters they are less than average as a team. I withhold my scepticism on DD until he plays in the season against first team line ups... Il Muggo the magician will sometimes pull rabbits out of the hat but can he turn the "flashes" into "steady lights" over the season. I guess that is why they play the games...Certainly will be more interesting to watch this year.:woohoo::woohoo:

not a cieling. it was saying "expect" us to make 8th. with that, the cieling would be 5th or so, which really, it makes us a sleeper team.
