(Sci-fi heads should realize I’m referencing the NBA player and not the movie, so, please, don’t expect an article on Morpheus or Neo. The lovely Trinity, well, that could be negotiated.)

Shawn Marion is no longer deserving of his nickname. His high-flying antics are a thing of the past, not because of diminished skill, but because of apathy. On Friday, Charlotte’s Gerald Wallace outworked the forward so badly in the first quarter that Toronto’s coaching staff quickly pulled him in favour of Joey Graham.

Wallace is talented. And he is motivated –the Bobcats are in the hunt for the eight seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. This, however, shouldn’t have been a mismatch.

Unfortunately, it was. Wallace looked like the Marion of yesteryear, the player the Raptors hoped they acquired in February’s blockbuster trade. While Toronto’s current three-man looked like he wanted to be anywhere but the Air Canada Centre, finishing with a paltry four points and six rebounds in a 102-89 loss.

These stat lines have become too common for the former All-Star. Well, why has Marion declined?

Confidence is a funny thing, especially for someone as sensitive as Marion. Even during his Suns heyday, coaches, general managers, and teammates had to reassure him of his talent. But the constant trade rumours, fuelled by his ‘max’ contract, took its toll and Marion’s game declined last year before eventually getting shipped to Miami.

Phoenix was perfect. ‘Seven Seconds To Shoot’ masked Marion’s sub par ball handling and inability to create his own shot. Moreover, Steve Nash’s passing artificially inflated his scoring. Miami and Toronto aren’t running teams and lack an All-Star table-setter, so Marion has been exposed.

Interestingly enough, he hits free agency in July. And Marion will be taking a massive cut on his 17 million dollar per year salary. Part of this can be blamed on the declining economy. Most of this is on Marion, who has become a league enigma.

Right now, he’ll be lucky to fetch the Mid Level Exception. In July of 2003, Juwan Howard signed with Orlando for the MLE after his ‘max’ contract came off Denver’s books. Howard averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds on the season. Most importantly, he was a model citizen for the rebuilding Nuggets. Marion has done none of this.

Today, Marion posted 13 points and 14 rebounds in a win over the lowly Clippers. His numbers and effort were respectable. Still, much more is needed to reclaim ‘The Matrix’ moniker.

You would think being in your contract season, you would would go balls out to get that one last pay-day. He's looked really unmotivated the last 3 seasons.

The only way I'd re-sign Marion is on a 1-year.

Marion is a good ball player and a convenient scapegoat for this horrible season.

I still think he can help this team. He does do the little things, has good court awareness, brings energy, and could be a good defender. It would be nice to get him fairly cheap, but then the question is whether he is happy enough with a smaller contract. That could be the big problem.

Honestly - I give him a bit of a pass for being sick since the trip out west. He looked like he had some gas in the tank yesterday. So I think he still warrants looking at closely. Not that I care exactly. I just think he could be the right guy to help bring an identity to this team.

what?
He's not a scapegoat at all. He's merely a small part of this year's complete suckage.

He can be pretty good... but tell me he doesn't look like he's mailed it in.

He's looked like he's mailed it in, which could be excused for any number of reasons (unless he actually decided to mail it in) - and he's also looked like a key part of a few nice wins.

When you get traded to a team that has mailed it in, how long can somebody honestly keep trying until they do the same?

Everyone, but Marion seems to be a convenient one for the media recently. I really didn't like Doug's article talking bullshit about how Marion missed 9 of the team's first 10 defensive assignments. As if the other 4 guys were all doing what they were supposed to. The whole team looked awful. And if an assistant really said that to Doug, he should of quoted him directly. It takes a horrible TEAM to get dunked on the first three possessions of the game, not one guy.

He's a convenient scapegoat because he hasn't been a part of the team very long. Everybody is tired of the old scapegoats, now it's Marion's turn.

Meh, I just want the season to be over with so we can look forward to the draft and the changes to be made this summer.

you make good points, PB. i agree that all the hate that we see in the media is a little too "conveniant" and exagerrated.

Still, it's hard for me to develope a real appreciation for Marion based on his play here. He really hasn't been as hungry as i would have liked him to be.

Marion is still a good player. I would want to keep him if the SG position is shored up . In the right system he's still an asset. The question is, is this the right system. Won't matter though because he won't want to stay here anyway.

Yep - if Marion stays then they definitely need added depth at the 2, and with an emphasis on being able to create their own shot. But that guy also has to be able to defend. And they need to actually settle on a system. If that happens and there is genuine improvement with the guys that have been considered the core of this team, then I could see a huge turnaround.

I hope that Marion continues to get bad press.

Then we can re-sign him for cheap.

when you're playing in your contract year (especially a player of Marion's mindset - which has gotten the rep of being greedy and money motivated), you'd think they wouldnt mail it in until the final season whistle blows.

he just isnt very good.
case closed.

Marion sucks now. He doesn't go up with authority and his defence isn't what it used to be. Now he misses like every lay-up attempt and isn't a hard nosed player like we need or like he used to be. I was expecting a whole different player then what we have in Marion right now
