Raptors Hollinger on Valanciunas

Quote:
Comment From BPBP:
What do you think of BC taking Valancuinus 5th? I don't doubt he'll be a good player in the NBA, but don't you think the Raptors need a PG more than a center right now?
John Hollinger:
Steal of the draft. When you're in Toronto's position you take the best player; if you have too many bigs you can always trade one for a PG, but if you pass on drafting a star you've set the franchise back.

Comment From BPBP:
But do you really see Valancuinus being better than Knight and Walker when they hit their prime?

John Hollinger:
Yes. Valanciunas is 19 and already arguably the best player in Europe. Scoring guards look great in highlights but they're much more common than 7-footers who can score.

Who would you compare Valanciunas to that is in the NBA right now?

John Hollinger:
Andris Biedrins (the young one, not the shell that's out there now) with a free-throw stroke

Nice, if Hollinger says it, it must be true.

OMG, Hollinger said something nice about a future Raptor!

But I thought he hated the Raptors. Bah!

I think we finally, finally got a steal in the draft.

I think that Davis and DeRozan might not be considered quite as much of a steal, but they both will end up better than several players drafted ahead of them.

DeRozan (at 9) is almost certainly better than Thabeet, Hill, and Flynn.

Davis (at 13) has a good shot at being better than Johnson, Edoh, Aminu, Hayward, Aldrich, and Henry. Hard to say after only one year, but we know he slipped because of the injury and he has been an incredibly consistent producer since recovering.

i'd say davis has a better chance of being the steal than derozan. derozan will be A steal, but not THE steal. Davis imo has a better shot of reaching his potential. he just seems much more down to earth and able than derozan. though i love derozans work ethic, dont get me wrong, but that only gets you so far.

That's complete nonsense...
He's far far far away from being the "arguably the best player in Europe".
No, no, no.
He can dunk, but he's got quite bad shot from medium range.
VALANCIUNAS, JONAS - Welcome to Eurocup - this is not Euroleague - this is Eurocup - much weaker tournament..
He's too weak for Euroleague as the starting center (his defense is kinda poor)...

He needs strong support from the PG's, as he cannot make play by himself alone.
He needs to improve... a lot.

P.S. he was playing much in EL and EuroChamp just because there were no other to replace him...

So the supposed future best player of the Raps is the next Biedrins. I hope is much better than that. We better strike it rich in the 2012 Draft.

Chad Ford does, he may be watching too much of it in fact.

I think Hollinger should limit the amount of stuff he writes because he's clearly very insightful and his non-stats stuff is becoming good. But he's trying to cover too much ground. Therefore the bloopers.

If a young healthy Beidrins is your best player, you are not a good team. I hope Jonas turns about to be a much better player than Biedrins, this franchise really needs it.
