Hollinger: Raptors season will be a brilliant success or spectacular failure

Quote:
Toronto: The Euraptors spent a ton of money this summer, but whether it was well-spent is a question open for debate. For starters, spending a combined $100 million for Turkoglu and Andrea Bargnani would make a lot more sense if basketball had a DH rule. Jarrett Jack at $20 million was excessive as well, and if the Euraps don't commit to paying a luxury tax down the road, these deals are going to give them a lot of problems.

But hey, it's not my money, and it might all work out brilliantly. They're committed to a floor-spacing, sweet-shooting outfit reminiscent of Bryan Colangelo's old Suns teams in a final crack at convincing Chris Bosh to stay beyond this season. Either that or they're trying to convince Bosh he's really living in Geneva; somebody needs to check to see if they aren't setting all the clocks six hours ahead up there.

While Toronto spent freely, there were some value moves beneath the surface: They got Rasho Nesterovic for a song and Marco Belinelli for less than that, and while I'm not high on DeMar DeRozan, a lot of folks whom I respect are.

I guess what I'm saying is I have no idea how this will work out, which is how they ended up in the mystery meat section. It's easy to split the difference and say they'll be a .500-ish team, but I don't think that will be the outcome. I'm expecting either a brilliant success or a spectacular failure, and I'm really not sure which.

Spectacular failure worse than 33 wins? No way

A lot of people here will definitely agree this. I'm leaning towards brilliant success but only slightly...

BC's swinging a big stick this season that's for sure.

Hollinger is not high on DeRozan? Well he's not high on Anthony Randolph either and that kid is about to have his coming out party. I really don't see how they can possibly to as bad as last season.

Especially considering that without the major injuries last season we could have been around 38-40 wins and challenged for a playoff spot imo. And considering we're much better and deeper this season at least on paper, it's crazy to think we could be anything but better.

the key to success in this season is having no injuries.

More weak BS from Hollinger. It's nice that he can waver enough to suggest it could be a brilliant success, but it's hard to see where the failure at the level he suggests comes about. It's pretty obvious that he simply doesn't give a shit, and thus can't see a well-balanced team that will go as far as they allow themselves to by knowing their roles and gelling accordingly. That still doesn't offer great illumination, but at least it's based in reality and not some nonsense about Hedo and Andrea's contracts somehow being poisonous, and Bosh needing to be convinced that Europe is wonderful.

As long as we don't get two major injuries at once we're fine, and even then?

example: if Bosh goes down....

Jose/Jack/Ukic
Derozan/Belinelli/Douby
Wright/Derozan/Pops
Turkoglu/Evans/Pops
Bargs/Rasho/POB

if Bargs goes down:

Jose/Jack/Belinelli
Derozan/Belinelli/Jack/Douby
Turkoglu/Wright/Derozan
Bosh/Evans/Pops
Rasho/Bosh/POB

if Calderon goes down:

Jack/Belinelli/Ukic
Derozan/Belinelli/Douby
Turkoglu/Wright/Derozan
Bosh/Evans/Pops
Bargs/Rasho/POB

I could live with any of those lineups, but a cecond injury to a starter would hurt us for sure.

That's where Hollinger looks really dumb. Injuries are going to hurt any number of teams, but we should be able to push through most scenarios without crashing and burning.

I think the bench depth could handle two injuries, depending on where they were. Injuries to Bosh and Bargs would be huge, but we could definitely make-do with injuries to say, Turkoglu and Bargs. Two injuries at the wing wouldn't necessarily be devastating either.

It sounds like he doesn't know what to think and so he predicts both ends of the spectrum. I think its a cop out. Its like me saying the Raptors could beat the Cavs on opening night but they might not. I mean what the hell is that?

I know, same with the Shaq deal. That could an epic fail (will be imo), or a huge success. And it could be said about just about every team. He needs to grow some balls and get off the proverbial fence.

Meaningless article. Why?

Well no shit it's going to be a 'success or failure' proposition for the Raptors. In fact, this applies to all teams that revamp half the roster with decent players. Until we actually see how the Raps play, there is no point in making these pointless "predictions".

I was kidding. lol

But i'm sure you knew that. Yeah i hate when they focus on our Euro flavor, not that it's a bad thing. The fact is we only have 4 rotation players that are Euro...

Turkoglu/Bargs/Beli/Rasho. We're not the most Eurpeon team in the NBA. The fact is alot of teams have quite a bit of Euro's and it's never pointed out like it is with the Raptors. Obviously it's the Americans way of saying, see americans don't want to go to Toronto, which then allows them to show their bias by saying it may be a huge failure.

Well I wasn't really looking in terms of roster proportionality.

But, seriously, comon on, if you're a writer working for ESPN, at least take a moment to realize the terms you are using. "Euraptors", is this guy joking?, a cognitively developed 5 year old can come up with that. Either come up with something semi-decent, or don't put that shit in at all.

I'm a fan .... a success!
I can't go as far as saying a great success, because for that you need to be a contender for the finals.
