Hollinger: Magic let the Raptors off the hook too cheaply

Quote:
Meanwhile, Toronto wriggled out of the bind their deal with Turkoglu put them in. The Raptors had to either renounce their rights to several players to give him the five-year, $53 million deal they'd agreed to or had to work a sign-and-trade for Turkoglu.

Toronto's acquisition is now technically a trade, which means three things for the Raptors. First, they got a passable wing reserve in the deal in Dallas' Wright. Second, Toronto didn't have to renounce its rights to Carlos Delfino and can sign him as another quality wing. And third, they still can use their midlevel and biannual exceptions to round out their roster this summer.

This is huge for the Raps, as their roster otherwise would have been completely denuded. I was already getting e-mails from Toronto fans with questions like "Think we can get Matt Barnes for the minimum?" Now they can pursue some added frontcourt help with their exceptions and make a real run at the playoffs.

In fact, by only getting the trade exception, Orlando let them off the hook quite cheaply. The Magic got cash in the deal, and that always helps, but I'm amazed they didn't get a draft pick or some other form of compensation for their trouble. They've enabled a conference rival to escape from a mess of their own making at shockingly little cost. Orlando is well over the luxury-tax line already and might never use the exception. And besides, they already had a midlevel exception available to use. The Magic should have demanded more to let Toronto off the mat.

Its not like Orlando expected Turk to come back. Thats why they got VC.

Hollinger is just jealous he's not as sexy (or well-paid, or successful, or talented) as Colangelo.

Orlando got off the hook with T-Mac for the 2nd rounder. Consider us even.

Yeah I didn't even know that Orlando were over the tax already and I thought it was a strange thing to do, this just makes it even harder to understand what they had to gain.

Maybe they don't care about the tax but they said otherwise, i.e. when Turk's contract was up.
And if they were going to pay tax anyway why not keep both Carter and Turkoglu.
Very curious what they're going to do.

I think for Otis and Hedo it was similar to Brian and Shawn. They both made offers, they weren't good enough for the player and so they attempted to help the player get what they wanted in a show of goodwill, while profiting in the process. The Magic didn't need to do any work for this. They had already given up on bringing Hedo back and received a $8M exception for doing no more work than signing a few papers. Brian Colangel and Mark Cuban did all the work, the Magic got a free ride. They should be happy with what they got because the other scenario had them empty handed.

What the Magic got in this is flexibility. If they want to work a trade later on this exception makes the process far more easy to get done. If they make a trade deadline deal you better believe some of this exception will come into play.

ya, but the problem is that they gave us a bench.

a real shot at a real bench anyway.

in terms of competition, what they did was pretty crazy and I'm left to think that BC used his Jedi powers...I was told he won't anymore...but ya..magical indeed.

Hey, we're just that Canadian team, right? We won't compete even if we get LeBron, Bosh, and Wade next summer.

The Magic are the Eastern Conference Champions. They just added Vince Carter, who is an upgrade to Hedo Turkoglu. They just landed themselves a $8M trade exception which huge in the current economy. Why? Because teams are looking to shed cap and even though they are well over they are now in position to take a salary cap dump to put their team over the top. They have the power to take advantage of a team who is struggling financially. That's huge.

A prime example for you would be New Orleans trying to move Tyson Chandler for peanuts.

Could you imagine a Magic starting lineup of Chandler, Howard, Lewis, Carter and Nelson? That would be friggin unstoppable. They have the power to pull such a move now.

Do you think the Magic are worried about the Raptors? Come on now, the Raptors aren't on their radar. The Cavs and Celtics are though; teams who just added Shaq and Sheed.

Yet you don't see teams breaking down his door, offering him an opportunity to take charge of their teams.

And his job as a sports journalist isn't as lustrous as BC's either...

im willing to bet if hollingers dad was a billionaire team owner, he could have been a GM, prob has more experience then BC did before he became the head honcho, so stop with the lame "he/you arent a gm".... when our gm got his job thru connections, not earning it.

This is a bet that I would take. I don't think the Magic are the favorites in the East by any means. They will be good but I"m not ready to, (as Dennis Green would say), crown their asses just yet.

As for the Trade exemption they acquired...they are already dangerously close to the luxury level if not at it. They may look to be buyers come trade deadline time but they won't be taking on any huge contracts because they'll have to pay double for that player.

i just telll the truth, look it up yourself Claudius, nothing BC did before becoming the GM of the suns indicate he earned the job whatsoever, other then knowing his dad. How many ppl become GMs in their early 30s?? You usually have to earn your stripes for 20 facking years before becoming a GM so dont give me the BS he earned it, its pretty obv, but his dad was a great gm, so he had a step up in knowing how things work and getting solid advice.

Not saying he cant be a good/great gm, just saying how he got his job is far from the regular way and its clear to anybody that does 2 min of investigating that he got the job cuz his dad owned the team... hollinger has just as much experience with nba salary cap, players etc that BC had before he become a GM, prob more, i stand by that.
