Default Hollinger: Kapono Has To Keep Shooting

However, here's a bigger number for Raptors fans: 23-of-45. During the past three games, 23 of Kapono's 45 shots have been from beyond the 3-point line; prior to that, it was only 34 out of 125.

It's an important ratio because Kapono is so ridiculously good at shooting from downtown -- he's at 43.9 percent on the season and 46.2 percent for his career. But none of that matters if he isn't taking the shot, and that's been a problem his entire career -- he shoots far fewer 3s than most long-range specialists and too many long 2s off the dribble. We'll see if it's just statistical noise or the result of some prodding from new Raps coach Jay Triano, but if Kapono keeps shooting this often from 3, he'll shoot Toronto to victory far more often than he shoots them to defeat.

No doubt. When he kept on shooting against the Nets he eventually found his stroke and started nailing all the shotss. Just keep it up JK

i personally believe that any shot JK takes when his feet are set is as good as any shot we can find on the offense
i think as long as he's decently open and set he should be taking the shots on the offense, unless someone else is on a roll

hollinger doesn't understand basketball. kapono shoots a high percentage because he takes smart shots. for him to shoot more, it's going to force him into taking lower percentage shots that will lower his shooting percentages. science?

I was very surprised to see him competely not ready to shoot at times yesterday. And then when I think of it more, the whole time he's been shooting more, he's also been caught not ready to launch on a good number of occasions. Then when he is ready - he doesn't get a look. Which is going to happen - but not being ready to shoot should never happen. There's been a couple times recently where the ball was just handed to him right where he likes to shoot, and he made it look like a game of hot potato. That's hard to figure out.

jason Kapono will recover and he seems to be very comfortable and responding well to Jay as his coach. that can only be good for the team in the long run.

That still doesn't take away from the fact he's the team's best shooter and should be shooting a higher volume of shots as he has been. Hollinger isn't saying he's the best shooter on the team just because he has the highest percentages...it's because he's the best shooter! Anyone who argues this is a moron. Having your best shooter take more shots(allowing for a slight drop in the quality at times) is just common sense!

Unbeleiveable that for almost 2 years now we've been crying for JK to shoot more and now that he is... people that are supportive of that come under fire.

I think they'd rather have the title of highest percentage then a win!

He probably wants to expand his game to beyond being just a stand still jump shooter, even if it is his strongest asset. It's nauseating to watch him put ball on the floor and throw up those wild floaters in the paint sometimes... But I guess you can't fault him for trying to expand his game. Sometimes what we need is the Kapono of old just nailing spot up threes in transition though.

JK and Bargs are the masters of the pump-fake travel. Never before have I seen two guys who get called for more travels in their first 2 steps after receiving the ball.

don't forget that Roko and Jose are masters of the "carry" ball violation too, man i cringed when a ref actually called roko for doing the same thing with the ball that every other guard in the league does... respect is a fleeting thing i guess...

He needs to shoot more, but he has to be ready to shoot, as mentioned - with his feet set. I agree with asdf in regard to him wanting to be a bit of a playmaker as well, but he needs to get better at picking his spots. The question is whether he can be the kind of guy that is going to be thinking about shooting at all times. If mentally he's not going to be that guy, then just firing up more shots doesn't solve much.

I like the idea of using stats to make points, however, I think it's wrong to live by them. Kapono might need to shhot more often, however, if he's not shooting well in any particualr game, it really doesn't matter what the over all hit/miss trend is over 5 games, especially if it means jacking up a shot in an important momentum swing that is ill advised, yo umiss, the other team runs down, hits a duece, and you're now out of the game.

Stats guys always miss that shit.

Last night, Toronto is down 4, miss a three, ball goes the pother way, made shot, NO makes a stop, ball goes the other way, 3 ball, game set match. A players over all trend means nothing at that point, but a smart play and a ball to the hoop and a foul....well, that does.

There's more to basketball than stats

there has to be an easier way to keep the game in reach than jacking 3's when no one is hitting them. Pushing the ball to the hole and initiating some contact has been a good play for a long long time... they seem to forget that at times.
