Hollinger: Bargnani, the worst help defender in basketball

Quote:
And while Calderon was getting torched on the perimeter, Bargnani in particular was awful as the last line of defense. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Calling him a center is like calling the guy who programs the synthesizers for Depeche Mode a drummer. He might be the worst help defender in basketball.

On one particularly brutal sequence, Bargnani was the help defender on a pick-and-roll with Williams and Carlos Boozer. His options: (A) show hard, (B) hedge and race back to Boozer or (C) just stay with Boozer. His choice: (D) none of the above. Bargnani watched Williams breeze by, stood in place as Boozer cut to the hoop and watched Boozer lay the ball in off a pass from Williams. He moved perhaps three feet the entire duration of the play.

On another help situation, Bargnani was actually more or less in the correct position when Utah's Ronnie Brewer drove past his man toward the hoop. Shocked by this state of affairs, Bargnani deftly avoided taking a charge against a man driving right into his midsection, permitting yet another Utah lay-in. Somehow, by the end of this play, Brewer was directly behind Bargnani, who was basically trying to block the shot with the back of his neck.

i agree.
he's in his own world sometimes... and when he does go to help, he is too slow by a second, and his man is always left open or grabs the uncontested offensive rebound and we get burned.

you would think that being with the raps for 3 years now, he must have some sense of defence. To me he always looks lost on the court. He has trouble setting pick and rolls and i am still scratching my head on how a 7 foot centre gets so little rebounds.

Solution: trade Bosh for a true center who can bang and likes to play down low (and some prospects), and move Bargs to power forward.

How awesome would it be if we had someone like Nene?

Bargs isn't going to get tougher just because he moves to PF

I actually agree with Hollinger 100% on this one.

Bargs displayed his horrible defensive tendencies by letting Boozer and Williams repeatedly drive by him yesterday like he wasn't even there. He's close to a foot taller than Williams and 4" taller than Boozer...

Bargs may have OK timing on blocking shots when he has 5 seconds to set up, but otherwise, he's got in my opinion the most horrible defensive awareness of just about anyone in the NBA. His rebounding is also awful - he routinely and repeatedly gets outmuscled, outworked and outsmarted for rebounds. As talented as he is on O, he's that deficient on D.

Yeah but he won't have to be as tough if he's not playing the 5. His lack of toughness won't be so routinely exposed.

Bargs might not be the greates help defender, but he is actually better than Bosh. Bosh has been a monster on rebounds and huge offensively this year taking it inside much more than he used to, but I cant believe people are calling Bargs a lousy defender and never mentioning anything about CB's defense.

The biggest problem with our defense seems to be the pick'n'roll with Jose and a big guy. Bosh is horrible in these situations (Bargs is not great, but often actually does show hard, making it hard for the opposing PG to drive or dish).

Boshes doubling is also really bad. Just look at the Denver game where he twice in a row left his man open to go half way to double Carmelo, but didnt really put any pressure on him. Both times Carmelo made an easy pass to Boshes guy (Nene) and our PG's didnt have a chance to stop the basket by rotating.

As I said, Bosh has had a monster year offensively and rebounding and is definately better player than AB, but if you only look at help D, then I'd give the edge to AB. People just dont want to see the negatives of Bosh as he is carrying the team in many ways and therefore throw dirt on Bargs.

He needs intensity.

Intensity is near next to impossible to teach, it has to develope.

Gulp....um..... how much time does he have?

Bargs needs Belinelli to get up in his face and cuss his mother out in Italian before every game.

Do you guys remember how supposedly one of the elements that went into BC's selection of Bargs with the #1 pick was that they put him through some sort of testing that showed he wasn't bothered by pressure?

I wonder if it's that same capacity (or, in this case, deficiency) that is making it hard for him to develop the aforementioned intensity.

You mean the same Nene who averages 14/9 on a very high octane Denver team that averages an inordinate amount of posessions per game? It would be alright; Nene is a solid center. He's not exactly going to turn anything around though; he averages ~3 rebs more than Bargs and ~3 fewer points in about equal minutes.

If your suggestion is to trade a 27/12 guy like Bosh and essentially get Nene back so Bargs can play PF... I think you need to go back to the drawing board on this one.
