We all know Riley wants to bring Bosh (or Lebron or Amare) here in 2010. With this trade, Miami will have $4.5 million more to spend and Toronto will have $4.5 million less because of Banks. That's a $9 million swing!

How badly did Riley potentially screw Toronto with this deal if he lands Bosh? Not only did he get the better end today, he also impaired Toronto when it comes to resigning their best player. Personally, I think that fact alone makes the deal completely worth it.

If you can't take the HEAT, get out of the kitchen.

I just have one question, what happens when a team goes over the cap?

do you guys really think that banks will get in the way of us signing Bosh and that colangelo didn't see that potential hazard coming? really? we can pay Bosh more than any other team, regardless of what salary we have on the books. mlse could stop that, but not league rules. banks is irrelevant to Bosh being here or going. totally and completely irrelevant.

a team cannot go over the salary cap to sign new players (unless they use an exception to do so).

the luxury tax is a separate thing. any team that goes over that threshold pays a dollar per dollar tax to the league that is re-distributed to the teams that stay under the luxury tax threshold.

that's a completely redicioulous statement to make before a single game has even been played, I really hope O'neal's injuries haunt the Heat and this guy eats his words.

Larry Bird exception
Perhaps the most well-known of the NBA's salary cap exceptions, it is so named because the Boston Celtics were the first team permitted to exceed the salary cap to re-sign one of their own players (in that case, Larry Bird). Free agents who qualify for this exception are called "qualifying veteran free agents" or "Bird Free Agents" in the CBA, and this exception falls under the auspices of the Veteran Free Agent exception. In a nutshell, the Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary. To qualify as a Bird free agent, a player must have played three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. This means a player can obtain "Bird rights" by playing under three one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years, or any combination thereof. It also means that when a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Bird exception to re-sign him. Bird-exception contracts can be up to six years in length.

It depends ... how about Wade leaves Miami, CB goes somewhere else (i.e. Toronto) and Miami and NY get nothing but cap space?

Most rational Heat fans see the possible pros and cons of the deal for both teams. In the short-term, this trade is potentially better for Toronto, as the Raptors needed a change, whereas the Heat are taking a risk: they were already playing well before the trade.. if JO gets injured again (I hope not, I live in Miami and am a Heat fan), for example, they would be out an efficient SF and still not have a reliable post presence. Plus, due to the economy the salary cap will shrink between now and 2010 - a lot of the teams saving up cap space for the 2010 sweepstakes are playing with fire. What Colangelo did ensures space for the 2009 offseason, one which will feature few competitors for whatever FAs he might have his eyes on.

What this trade comes down to, as with most other trades, it's that it's too early to tell who came out the "winner". It could potentially benefit all parties involved though, making everyone happy.
