Has Interior defense always been an issue?

Not just the last 2 years but the years prior? It seems like we've always been bad in this category.

Kirby 01-30-2011 03:01 PM

Ever since Bosh and Bargs, yes.

Shifty.py 01-30-2011 03:03 PM

I think you mean we've been bad rebounding team for a while.
Only when Marion or Reggie Evans played then we were ok.

But right now thers no defense to speak of, interior or posterior. Its' all in shambles and I blame coach.

Ligeia 01-30-2011 03:15 PM

Someone might have a better recollection than I, but I believe that it's been an issue since Bosh was drafted. Prior to that, they were a little undersized but had guys like Oakley, Antonio Davis, Marcus Camby, etc. who weren't afraid to battle it out down low.

However, I'm not sure that it's ever been this bad. Or I could be engaged in hyperbole during a bad stretch for the Raptors. Who knows?

From what I recall, it really began as Ligeia stated, with Bosh being drafted.

I'm not saying it's Bosh's fault. Not @ all.

It's really just the last time we were really bad. Actually, we weren't terrible when we had Garbo @ the 3, Bosh @ the 4 and Rasho @ the 5. There was something there.

no i agree with u in a way i remember before we drafted bosh we were one of the best defensive teams with antonio davis, JYD, but the problem was we just couldnt score which led to the JYD trade.

Admiral 01-30-2011 08:20 PM

ever since the days of AD, oakley and JYD ended we've had poor interior D, mostly because we've had to rely on a new set of young guys which a lot of them don't understand the meaning of sacrificing the body
those older guys played in the age where it was much more rough and tough
and the league is getting more and more about star power, we have none so we already start at a disadvantage

DDaring 01-30-2011 10:52 PM

When we had tougher guys who weren't afraid to deliver a hard foul we actually had very good perimeter defense. But ever since Antonio Davis was traded away we've been soft as a kitten on the interior.

Yes. Donyell Marshall was a very good rebounder, but his initial defense was not very good at all. He was just too slow of foot, and he didn't play physical. And Jalen Rose couldn't defend me, lol.

Even when we had Antonio and Charles, there was not a consistently good defense based on communication and help. There was many a game where they didn't stand a chance due to Vince's disinterest and a lack of depth defensively. JYD was not a good defender at all. Alvin and Chris Childs brought some of the best defense that I remember. The playoff run where they beat the Knicks and took Philly to the wire , was probably the best stretch of real defense this team has ever committed to. Outside of that, it's really not been something that could ever be counted on.

KO had a stretch where he had everyone buying into it. I mostly remember him yelling at Vince full blast, to "get the fuck back" whenever he was slow to get up off the floor after an off-balance layup or shot. Vince loved being on the floor, but never got floor burns. But KO did manage to light a flame under his ass to the point where it really made a difference. If he could have played like that earlier, and had there had been good communication, the Vince era could have seen much more success.

We never had Garbo long enough to know how that would turn out long term.

KO FTW!

That team could get stops at important times. That's a pretty good start. I think the problem longterm was not as much about Garbo not lasting long enough, as it was about who did stay long-term.

Yeah, our interior defense was bad since Bosh. Bosh was seen as a weak side blocker but we never had a good defensive C to anchor our defense since way back in the early times.

Far too many bigs are touted as weak side shot blockers.... That definitely wasn't Bosh's strength. Even that team was soft inside. This team hasn't played physical basketball for a long time... and when guys like Bonner, Joey and Hoffa did lay some wood nobody backed them up...

I know what you mean and agree. Our interior has been soft until now. Amir and Davis play gritty and hard down low. We really need a true and big C.
