Greivis Vasquez

His QO is only 3.2mil, it's pretty obvious he's going to get a pretty good offer from someone. What does everyone think his market value is right now? I have a feeling that if we re-sign Lowry we won't be able to match whatever offer Vasquez gets.

In other words, only one of these PG's will be back imo.

Will he get....

4-5mil?

5-7mil?

7+mil?

Thoughts?

They're both back. This team played its best ball in a 2 PG system and it allowed Lowry to focus being one of the primary offensive options.

Wictory 05-11-2014 12:10 PM

I think it all depends on what Lowry nets. I don't understand how the cap works, but I see a balance that can be worked out to sign both. This is the first time in years we have an effective point guard combo as opposed to a controversy.

I think it would be smart to offer Vasquez something as soon as possible as opposed to letting him test the market regardless of his restricted status. I easily see a laker team offer a contract similar to Jose's in Dallas, 6-7 that I don't MU might match. I say try to pick him up at 5 early on. Then again it depends on what Lowry's agent throws on the table

DSWC 05-11-2014 12:16 PM

With the cap going up this year, I think both Lowry and Vasquez are brought back. Lowry will get over $10 Mil (maybe more than $12), and Vasquez will get less than the MLE. I think Vasquez will get something like 4.5 with 3 years plus a team option for the 4th.

He wants to be back, so he will get long-term security and a bit of a "hometown" discount. He absolutely loves it in TO.

jeffb 05-11-2014 12:18 PM

Let's say we sign Lowry at 12mil/yr do we then match say a 6-7mil offer for Vasquez? Do we want 18+mil tied up in PG's + De Colo? I have a feeling that GV gets a sizeable offer.

Tommy C 05-11-2014 12:41 PM

I can see GV fetching 5-7mil. I don't think we will match it if that's the case. However, if Lowry goes somewhere else then what? Do we sign GV as a short term solution?
Also timing is everything.... Let's just say Vasquez gets an offer and we have a few days to match it, but Lowry's negotiation hasn't been completed yet. What do we do then?

jeffb 05-11-2014 12:46 PM

One thing I will say is that Ujiri doesn't seem the type to not retain assets and lose them for nothing.

KoolAid 05-11-2014 02:24 PM

If we can keep Lowry and GV for a combined 16 mil, I'd be a happy camper.

cloudnine 05-11-2014 03:19 PM

Between 4-5, likely the same for Patterson.

I'd be surprised if GV is in that range. I think 6-7mil is likely. Certainly he could fetch Calderon kind of money.

Gurk 05-11-2014 04:01 PM

I have a question, say if some team offers him 7 mil , it's not like he has to accept the offer. At this point I don't think he cares about the money too much, I think if we offer him 5 mil and some other team offers him 7 he will still come back

He would turn down 7Mil + a starting role for less money here as a backup (if we re-sign KL)?

Besides it doesn't work that way. We will extend him a QO of 3.2mil. We can't then offer him 5mil or change the amount. Either he accepts that QO over any offer made or he signs an offer sheet and we decline/match.

Not sure, but I suppose we can decline the QO and allow him to become a UFA and then make him our own offer.

Oh okay I wasn't sure of how it worked with a RFA. I highly doubt any taem wants him as a starter tho, if there aren't many teams going after Lowry how many teams are going to go after GV. We'll see tho, plus he really likes it here, no one else has made it known like him about how much he likes it here

I think there will be 4-5 teams going after Lowry (Raps, LAL, Orlando, Houston, Knicks and probably 1 or 2 that we don't expect. Now, just say we sign him......what PG's are out there on the market this summer? How do you think Vasquez would look In Houston or Orlando?

Wictory 05-11-2014 04:16 PM

i think he might turn down a 7 mil starter offer given that the raptors provide him a long contract akin to the situation we had with amir. I dont see a team giving him 7 mil for more than 3 years. I think he would bite on a 4.5-5 mil 5 year contract.

Question is would the team commit to vasquez long term as a backup and temporary/potential starter?

Diamond Scorpion 05-11-2014 04:58 PM

If we could keep Lowry at no more than 4yrs 50 mil (would like the money to be less) then I would give Vasquez no more than 5 mil per yr. Contract I would like to see agreed upon is 3yrs 12 mil.

Tommy C 05-11-2014 05:14 PM

It's a business after all and at the end of the day do people really think that he will take 2mil/ year less possibly even being a starter just to stay here? On top of that, places like TX and FL have no state income tax which is a great incentive for players. He is a businessman after all. He says all the right things, and he is NOT gonna give us a friendly discount, it just doesn't work this way, especially that his first NBA contract wasn't really all that great. The time for him to earn his big contract is now.

No, that's completely wrong. Of course we can negotiate a new contract with him. Extending the qualifying offer just means he is free to accept it at any time, and that if he accepts another team's offer we can match. In no way does it restrict our ability to offer him a contract.

Oh, my bad.

Knicks are no threat. They'd only have the tax payer's MLE (3M ish). Houston would have the MLE, unless they manage to drop a lot of salary. I seriously doubt the Lakers blow ANY 2015 cap space on Vasquez. Orlando I could see thinking it is time to make a move, and Lowry fits, but Vasquez doesn't really. I'd have it think they'd target a PG in the draft instead.

Of that list, Orlando and LAL and maybe at a stretch HOU are threats for Lowry, and only HOU is really a threat for Vasquez that I can see.
