Raptors Grantland: Are we sure Ujiri is that good?

Quote:
Here’s another one: Are we sure Masai Ujiri is that good?I love the way he thinks. But if you throw away the superb Carmelo trade (really a James Dolan panic trade more than anything), let the record show that he flipped Arron Afflalo (one of 2014’s best bargains) and a probable 2014 lottery pick16*for a one-and-done Iguodala; overpaid Nene and flipped him for the even-more-overpaid McGee; splurged more than $70 million on two small forwards (Wilson Chandler and Gallinari); then fled for Canada. And now, Denver is a lottery team. These are the facts.

He kinda sorta maybe left behind a Dumpster fire, right? Then in Toronto, he dumped Andrea Bargnani’s deal for a first-rounder, made the savvy Rudy Gay trade and smartly held on to Kyle Lowry— oh yeah, Masai is definitely good! What was I thinking? My bad.

and if they made it out of the first round, everything changes.

Until he fucks up here, I'm sure he's good.

Ujiri sucks.
JV is awful.
DD is a cancer (yup, read that in the GT last night)
Top ten in O eff and D eff, but have the worst coach in the league.
etc, etc, etc.

These are tough times in Raptorland.

Lots of manure there.

The Afflalo trade was part of the Dwight Howard saga, and apparently Iguodala would have stayed in Denver if Ujiri hadn't left. What did Ujiri have to do with Gallinari blowing out his knee and having a surgical procedure not work out. And Javale is younger than Nene, and has been injured all year. He's a better defender than Nene. Wison Chandler? How many on this board want to trade for him?

jeff, man, why you have to post this like it's a big grantland headline or something? it's basically a quick aside from simmons, and it's mostly a compliment, set as a joke, and kinda out of context when separated from the 5000 or so words in that huge article.

it's mostly a compliment, but simmons is sneaky
if Mu fails, two years from now he will say "I told you so" ...

and some of the things in there are only semi-jokes, he did have some missteps, the chandler deal is not that great, McGee may turn out pretty nasty. AI was a gamble (think Karl accused AI of giving inside info to the warriors, so it's possible he would have bolted anyway).

no GM is mistake proof

If MU fails in 2 years he can blame the mess on BC - it's basically BC's team still.

Denver was doing really good until the organization decided to tank. Getting rid of masai and george karl, what do you expect them to do now?

oh yeah, still BC team with the two biggest contracts gone, and our team in hunt for the 3rd spot.

the difference is MU build a team for Casey type of coaching, versus BC biulding a team for his liking.

but, man, BC is gone, and Mu is doing a pretty good job for now.

we are all happy he had the guts to trade Barg right away. and also Rudy, as soon as a good offer came in.

BC drafted DD, TR and JV. BC dealt that pick for KL. DD extended Amir. So you can see why people say its his team as the starting 5 is composed of players he drafted, dealt for and extended. Granted yes it's not including AB or RG.

I was expecting a more major move before the deadline. Didn't want a blockbuster deal but was hoping something that will get us over the 'no man's land' hump.
Keeping Lowry and taking the risk if he walks is a gamble. It's either MU isn't big on him or confident he will be able to bring him back, or work a sign & trade (I doubt so).
I didn't get a chance to hear the press conference but I am disappointed that we were not able to get some value to bolster our bench or make us better. Oh well, welcome De Colo, I guess...

To me it always comes back to - BC was great at individual moves. His draft, his trades, all good execution. Usually found creative ways to play the cap with his signings (Hedo sign and trade comes to mind). Each individual move was well conceived (even when it was a risk, such as the JO deal) and well executed.

But his big picture was pretty bad. Throwing away assets to get Rudy Gay (who the team is infinitely better without this year). Holding onto Bargs for so long, seemingly as a centerpiece. Trying to surround Bosh with JO, Turk, etc - all good individual moves, that led to a completely flawed team. His team building is where he failed.

So to say that because his pieces are being used correctly now that it is his team is wrong. He was always capable of getting the pieces - he just couldn't use them. All credit to Ujiri seeing what pieces needed to go and which needed to stay, in terms of the current success of the roster.
