Raptors Grantland: Raptors starting 5 among the best in the NBA?

Toronto Drakes

Quote:
The starting lineup of Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Amir Johnson, and Jonas Valanciunas outscored opponents by 85 points in just 253 minutes together the equivalent of nearly 12 points over a full game, on par with some of the league's very best five-man groups. Tyler Hansbrough is an able third big man, Landry Fields has rebuilt his jump shot after elbow surgery, Valanciunas and Terrence Ross have an NBA season under their belts, and the battle for backup minutes behind Lowry has been fierce. In other words: Toronto should be in the thick of the morass for the nos. 6-8 spots.

But everything about the Drakes is uncertain. Lowry's in the last year of his contract, with a checkered NBA past, and Gay may well opt out of the final year of his deal in order to test free agency this summer. DeRozan is overpaid, but still learning. Masai Ujiri, the Drakes' new GM, will have chances to blow this roster up if other teams sweating their win totals offer even just a little something for these guys. Go that route, and the Drakes would sink below the morass and into the high-lottery sweepstakes.

For the first time in 5 years, it would be nice if this team actually over exceeded the expectations of writers and critics for once. Over the last few seasons, every time a win/loss total was predicted, or a pre season summery was provided we almost always finish below the critics expectations. THey say we finish at .500 and we really finish 5-10 games back from that. They say they see a .550 winning percentage and we struggle to make it a .500.....for once please Raptors, over exceed your poorly thought of expectations.

Swing team is about right. And I like the uncertainty built in, personally, because it means they shouldn't get stuck in the morass category.

And he really should call the team the Mighty Drakes. I think I'll let him know.

And who are really to blame here, the Raps or the writers and fanbase?

Lol but seriously, just today I read in this other thread here that Anthony Davis, Val and I think Drummond will be the next super bigs in the NBA!

With expectations like that no wonder people get disappointed.
Aim low!

Davis and Drummond will be for sure. Not as sure about JV but he's looked promising.

It's what they kept telling us about the Blazers last year. Then we peeled off 13 losses in a row at season's end. I don't listen to THEM anymore, I just watch basketball.

That's an interesting comparison...both teams with decent starting lineups but shitty benches. Although I think lillard/wes/batum/LMA/Hickson was better than our starters will be.

Every year we think we'll be good and finish under .500. From past experience I won't be tricked into that again.

It's crazy how much hype people have given Drummond. He hasn't proven a thing in the NBA. He's proven less than JV and AD in my books. I don't even think he'll be as good a player as Monroe. Monroe is highly underrated.
