Raptors Grantland: Raptors season preview/predictions

Quote:
he Market for Big Expiring Contracts Will Be Disappointing
It always is. Remember when Hornets fans speculated feverishly about what Peja Stojakovic's expiring contract might bring, only to find out in November 2010 that it brought only Jarrett Jack and two journeymen and cost them Jerryd Bayless as bait for the Raptors?
Quote:
The Spurs, Bucks, and Raptors Will All Make at Least One Minor Deal
All three are overcrowded on the front line, with players both young and cheap that could become expendable if teammates around them develop at a certain rate. DeJuan Blair, Ed Davis, and someone from among Milwaukee's front-line crew of youngsters should be movable in exchange for some minor savings or a future draft pick. The Spurs also have an abundance of backup guards, with Patty Mills, Gary Neal, Cory Joseph, and Nando De Colo all showing early flashes of minutes-worthy play. (Neal, of course, has been a mainstay of Gregg Popovich's rotation for two seasons.) San Antonio is about $1 million under the tax line, so they don't absolutely have to move any of these guys. But if they get something, even a second-rounder, it's worth exploring.

Quote:
The Eight Eastern Conference Playoff Teams Will Be
Miami, Boston, Indiana, Atlanta, Brooklyn, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Toronto and Milwaukee will push hard for the no. 8 seed but fall short.

Bonus Raptors prediction: The Raptors will make a push for a top-10 ranking in points allowed per possession, a remarkable potential turnaround for a team that was an embarrassing dead last with a bullet just two seasons ago. Dwane Casey got this crew up to no. 14 last season, and with Kyle Lowry onboard to hound opposing point guards as the young bigs get more experience under Casey, another jump is possible. Integrating Jonas Valanciunas and reintegrating Andrea Bargnani will present some early challenges, and the Raptors might give up some more easy points if they remain committed to pushing the pace and shooting 3s. But this is a team to watch.
The Miami Heat's offense, James Harden's contract, and more bold predictions for the 2012-13 NBA season - Grantland

for the most part i agree with this. i just hope his playoff predictions are off. and i can see the Raptors making a minor deal this season we have a lot of "redundant talent" most of us call it depth, i can see us making a trade sometime down the line and i know most hope its more major than minor.

I just can't see the Hawks making the playoffs... i think Smith will be dealt to a team like Denver partway through the year and they'll tank for a top-3 pick.

^ i read his entire thing and he believe the hawks can be a 4 our 5th seed. they lose joe johnson and dont miss a beat and the nets add him and go from being one of the conference worst teams to a top team. i disagree with that.

I don't necessarily think the Hawks make the playoffs, but it's easy, for me at least, to see why someone would think they can, now that the rosters are complete. I'm just surprised by the 4th/5th prediction. I can see 6th-8th.

Yeah, they lost Johnson, but they also added several pieces that might mitigate the effect of the loss. Korver and Morrow can hit outside shots, so some balance is still there. Lou Williams and Devin Harris give them better backcourt bench depth over last year.

Also, Horford missed 50+ games last year. So his return is adding a substantial upgrade to their frontcourt over last season. And then there is the possible internal improvement of Jeff Teague.

5th seems high, but playoff berth seems reasonable. Not a sure thing but reasonable.

This has a bunch of predictions aggregated: 2012-13 Raptors Predictions | Raptors Republic | ESPN TrueHoop's Toronto Raptors Blog

The Grantland prediction is pretty accurate, I think. We'll be right there and may get lucky in that another team gets the injury bug or in that we land a quality player around the trade deadline. Ultimately, though, I think we're still going to be on the outside looking in. There are just 8 team better than us in the East, it seems. Hawks are the only team, as many people believe, that can stumble and not make the post-season. If not, I don't see another team sliding out of the playoff picture.

Hawks- May struggle
Philadelphia- IMO this is a team that could struggle especially if Bynum can't stay healthy
Chicago- Without Rose they better stay healthy until he gets back or they're likely fucked

Hawks are going to drop alot. When a team loses its star player, there is going to be a big drop-off. Look at the Raptors. At least the Sixers replaced Igoudala with Bynum, but how long will he be on the floor. I watched Chicago last night, great defense with a strong froncourt of Noah, Boozer, and Gibson. However, Chicago was able withstand the loss of Rose last year with a great bench. Brewer, Asik, Lucas, Korver, and CJ Watson are all gone.

The bias here is crazy.

The Hawks are better than us. Simple as that. The best player they have is better than our best player, simple as that. The role players they have are better, if not equal to the role players we have here.

I want the Raptors to make the postseason just as much as you guys do, but there simply are 8 teams better than us.

I would put us in the same bracket as Milwaukee.

No one said that Raptors are better than Atlanta. It was mentioned that they might struggle. They have replaced their perennial all-star and go-to-guy with devin harris and louis williams.

agreed.

better and finishing higher are different things anyway. Raps look solid and ready to go, we don't know if atlanta are.

if you asked me right now who i think will finsish higher i'd probably say atl but the difference isn't enough for me to discount us finishing higher.

I'll say it. We're better than Atlanta. Their backcourt is extremely small, their role players rely on others creating for them, and all of Atlantas backcourt look for their own shots a majority of the time. I dont think their chemistry will be good, nor their defence. If they continue to play slow, their offence will be even worse this year, which is terrible.

Horford is a little overrated as well. I think both teams have fairly equal chances of struggling for stretches.

Josh Smith openly said he wouldn't resign w/ Atlanta iirc (not sure) but yeah I see them trading him for whatever they can get... that opens up a playoff spot for us. I honestly saw the Wizards finishing ahead of us but with Wall injured for the first month that may cause them to struggle out of the gate and lose some games that may prove important later on in the season.

Harris/Teague/Williams
Morrow/Stevenson/Jenkins
Korver/Smith/D. James
Smith/Tolliver/Pachulia/Johnson
Horford/Pachulia/Petro

I don't think they're that bad, nothing spectacular but not bad imo.

Teague is 100% starting. The sg/sf position looks like its up in the air, but I think theyre going with Teague/Harris, and Williams being the guy who gets all of the minutes at both the 1/2 off the bench. Dunno why you have him as 3rd string.

I just threw up the names, didn't put any thought in who is starting. Point is they don't look bad.
