Default Grantland: Raptors 3rd Least Watchable Team

Found this exchange between Bill Simmons and Zach Lowe kinda funny

Quote:
Bill: If Jonas Christ Superstar makes the leap, or even a semi-leap, I could see myself getting roped into a couple of crunch times. That's about it. I'm allergic to DeRozan's game and Rudy's game.

Zach: They are generally boring to watch, with DeRozan and Rudy curling around screens, catching, dribbling five times while they stand still, and then launching bad shots. But there's some potential here.

Bill: That would be a fun marketing campaign for the Raptors: "SCREEN CURLS, FIVE STANDING-IN-PLACE DRIBBLES AND AWFUL JUMP SHOTS … COME SEE YOUR 2014 RAPTORS!"

Zach: "ALSO: DOES KYLE LOWRY HAVE THE BIGGEST ASS IN THE LEAGUE? WATCH HIM GLARE ANGRILY AT RUDY GAY EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE FRIENDS!" You and Jalen need to pour one out for the Raptors mascot, though.

Bill: Done.

Sadly it's pretty accurate.

Ross stepping up might make the games more fun though and Tyler adds a random element of danger.

100% accurate. Anyone who says otherwise is a true homer. Our offence is deplorable to watch. Even Philadelphia will be more watchable on offence, because even though their shooting % will be godawful, at least they pass the ball to one another.

Lol pretty much. That and the occasional backdoor screen for an alleyoop. Everything else is Iso and mid range screen curls.

There were moments late last season that got me quite hopeful, otherwise I would have to agree. But Ujuri says this is the team that people everywhere are going to want to watch. I'm not sure if there was a timeframe to get to that point, but I'll be expecting some movement towards that this season.

So we have 3 players in our rotation who are highlight reel dunkers, but we are the 27th most watchable team.

Makes some sort of sense I guess.

I think it's a bit unfair to put us so low. We have a young, athletic team that counts the reigning dunk champ as part of the roster, and will (hopefully) be making defense the focus this year, leading to more transition baskets/breakaway dunks.

Plus, there are Psycho T's comically overaggressive play, Lowry's tendency to hurl himself into defenders to draw fouls, Novak's sweet stroke, and JV's potential for vast improvement to keep an eye on. Add in the general uncertainty of the team's future and the desperate burden to perform from day one (or blow up the team/likely fire the coach), and I think we've got the personnel and the subplots to make the team quite watchable.

I realize there are a number of criteria the teams were ranked on, and we are near the bottom when it comes to some of them (like playoff relevancy, as it's unlikely we'll get past the first round if we make it). But overall, I'd rather watch this team than many, many others. Yes, I'm obviously biased here, but I think they ranked us too low.

if they base the offence around JV and Amir, and play an in-out style of game, which I think they will given casey's recent statement on focusing on the 3 pt shot, specifically the corner 3, then we will be very fun to watch on offence

Simmons ranked the Spurs in the bottom half. Which is pretty crazy. Although I do agree completely about Sean Elliot. There is subjectivity upon subjectivity in this. For me there are teams with identities that I'll watch anytime, and the rest get equal attention. And I'm hoping we see a Raptors team that develops something of an identity.

I don't think Casey is good enough to pull that off on offense. the only hope I have is that Nurse can actually make it happen. Regarding the rankings seems about right to me we are playing very static ugly basketball (other than occasional dunks)

i don't disagree totally.
there is to much ISO, for sure. not enough ball movement, and i think the fact that they do to much turnover make it happen more.

but Raptors had after Gay come next season a solid offense, fun to watch enough.

I'm really hoping that DeMar's game is vastly improved -- in the preseason his off the dribble game seems much better. That alone should make us much more watchable as Raptors fans. Otherwise, I agree, there's not much in the way of jump-out-of-your-seat excitement on our team right now, unless Jonas becomes a one man beast on both ends of the court.

I'd watch the Raps before Philly, Boston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Detroit, Charlotte, Dallas. Beyond that I agree.

I to hate watching derozan and gay run around screens and always never have a good a shot,

its interesting that gay shooting was almost as bad as Bargnanis last year but at least plays d i'll give him that and he has better leadership skills
