Default Grange: What is Bargnani thinking?

That is the million dollar question. Whether he's happy, mad or sad, we just have to face the fact that will never really know how Andrea's feeling.

Different people react differently in these kinds of situations. Chris Bosh is expert at staying cool at all times, rationally responding to tough questions and softballs alike. His batting stance never changes.

Sam Mitchell goes on the offense, challenging assumptions, probing weaknesses, attacking the question and sometimes the person asking it.

I've seen other athletes opt for the silent treatment, or just disappear.

But like a lightening road Bargnani reacts not at all.

Even better, I have no idea what to make of it. Is he angry? Not angry? Amused?

The only adjective I have in the arsenal is inscrutable, and it's not just a language barrier, which may play some role. I've talked to Italian speaking journalists who say it's no different in his mother tongue.

The relevance here is that Bargnani continues to play a major role on a playoff team based almost entirely on the promise of his production: when the moon is right he might be the most prolific scorer on the court.

But that happens just sometimes. He's a seven-foot jump shooter who shoots just 39 per cent from the floor. A three-point threat that is shooting just 27.6 per cent from deep since the All-star break.

Is he worried? Practising more? Altering his mechanics? Watching film?

Ask him all these things and he'll respond in coach-speak and say that his main emphasis is defence and rebounding.

At this point you don't have the heart to point out that he averages 3.7 rebounds and rarely blocks shots, makes steals and is prone to picking up cheap, early fouls, and falling behind in rotations.

(By the way: Mitchell told reporters that he plans to stick with the same starting lineup that got blitzed 43-23 in the first quarter on Sunday, but will likely got to more and varied combinations as the game unfolds, with Bargnani playing more minutes at the four along side Bosh at five as he tries to create better spacing for Bosh. Mitchell also said he'd use a small lineup Bosh at five and even Jamario Moon at four and try to force Orlando into matchup problems of their own)

Anyway. Here's a pre-game conversation with Bargnani:

When did you find out you were starting?

I was happy. It was nice to start.

Are you still confident in your jumper?

Mmm-hmm.

You've been struggling most of the season

Mmm-hmm.

Honestly, I'm starting to believe the only reason Bargnani didn't put up at least 15-17 ppg this year is because he forgot how to fucking shoot. It's not a matter of creating the shots or having the variety, he just can't do it anymore. He can't even hit open jumpers right now. He should go to the gym and shoots 500 jumpshots every day this summer until he learns how to do it again, jesus fucking christ.

How frustrating is it to see him miss wide ass oopen jumpers less than 10 feet from the basket? My goodness. 10 friggin feet. And it's not like it's happened once or twice. It seemingly happens every game. I can hit that shot with paper basketballs into a waste paper bin for frig's sake.

You know who he's reminding me more of day by day? Alexander Daigle. Both 1st overall selections, both seemingly had this blazay attitude and I don't think they both really cared to play. That and the fact that they has/had so much potential, but has seemingly regressed a bit.

Bargs has to come hungry. He has to want it. He has to want to be a better player and committ his life to basketball. Not just 60 or 70%, but 100% of himself.

Grange is a moron. He asked a bunch of moronic questions. WHat do you expect the player to say. """"Oh no the more he plays me the worse I get" It's stupid journalism. On top of that you can see by some of his answers that he didn't even understand some of the questions. Just more N American ""Everyone should speak english busllshit.""" Grange should go to Europe and have an Italian interviewer ask him questions in English (Italian version) see how much he understands.

grange and most other media people dont really ask questions. friedman, he asks questions. everyone else says something and the player repeats what they just said.
