Arrow Grange: The Turkoflu

Quote:
The problem with Turkoglu leaving the game at halftime with an upset stomach is that heís got no track record of leaving it all on the floor, so to speak. From his training camp sabbatical to his sore hip to his sore knee to his sore ankle and now his sore tummy, if Turkoglu ainít right, Turkoglu ainít going.

And, as I point out above, most times thatís the right move to make. And let me say out loud here: If he was puking his guts out at halftime and moaning on the floor calling for his mother, by all means, Iím not suggesting he should have or could have continued to play.

But the real issue is this: Is there one person who Ė upon hearing Turkoglu wasnít coming back after the half Ė who didnít roll their eyes?

Iím still waiting for Jay Triano to throw one of his players under the Bentley publicly. When he was asked last night if there was any indication that Turkoglu was feeling sick at any point before the game, Triano didnít exactly leap to his defence, basically saying that the first heíd heard of anything was at halftime when he was told Turkoglu wasnít going to play any more.

Like I said, thereís every chance that he was really, really sick. But fair or not, Turkoglu doesnít have much credibility on the issue. This is a big problem. It may be an image problem, but itís a real problem nonetheless.

All pro athletes really want from the teammates is for them to perform. Be an ass? Fine. Pout? Fine. Whine about your contract? Fine. If you play hard and practice hard and help your teammates reach their goals? All is forgiven.

Do none of those things but donít play hard, well and consistently? The nicest guy in the world will get ostracized pretty quick.

Hedo seems like a genial guy, quick with a smile, friendly, all of that. And you can make the case that he has, in some hard-to-define way made the Raptors better: Bosh is having a career season, Bargnani too. Could it be because Turkoglu has made the game easier for them with a flurry of Gretzky assists?

Maybe.

But itís just as hard to make the case that the $53-million man has his teammatesí backs and will go to war with them and for them, because he hasnít so far and itís getting pretty late for him to prove that he will.

Kind makes you feel queasy.

Patience does run thin.......... But not for Triano it seems.

by all accounts Turkoglu was known to have questionable self-motivation back in Olrando. Note the difference between stan Van Gundy and Jay Triano.

I or the typical raptor fan did not nesessarily know this, but you would have thought Colangelo would have done his homework. Acutally my guess is that he probably thought it wasn't that big a deal.

Funny thing is that Bargnani is just like Turkoglu.

I've always looked at the Turkoglu signing as much as a PR ploy to keep Bosh happy as anything...and to that end i've always supported it. After witnessing all the rotten egg performances by the team this year though it's getting hard to defend Bosh as the go forward guy. I've always said you talent to win, but you need heart and you need to be able to lead and for whatever reason, Bosh isn't getting these guys to play, nor is Triano...and so maybe in some way it would be best to move on without either.

At some point too these guys have to be able to kick themselves in the ass and get motivated, they're not only professional athletes but grown ass men. Bosh is the franchise guy and as such is subject to criticism, no doubt. I don't think Bosh has done a good job of following through on his comments in the media, and I also haven't seen him assume the leadership role that I expect out of a "max" player. That said something has to give and these players have to take it upon themselves to right this ship. They can't rely on having their hand held through this slump because well, that's pathetic.

Eric and Jack were talking about this very issue today on the radio and remember that players only meeting that supposedly corrected things back in December? Well apparently that Bosh didn't say one word during that whole meeting. He admitted as such and said that he had nothing to say.

You want a leader? You want a guy that other players feel they need to step it up for? Bosh isn't that guy.

And for anyone that says we need better talent around him, you guys are essentially asking for a new franchise player.... and guess what? We all know we're not in the position to have two franchise players.

I'm not ready to give up on Bosh just yet, although his shot selection and overall performance wasn't all that impressive yesterday. It seems like Bosh has been an overachiever his entire life, but I'm not sure if he can put himself on par with the LeBron's, Wade's, Kobe's and Melo's of the world. Keep in mind those players have a hierarchy of their own, but they're all rated higher than Bosh. I wish there was a way to make this all work with Bosh and Bargnani, but it's beginning to look like a lost cause and something has to change in order for us to take it to the next level.

If we were to part ways with Bosh, is the Bynum swap seeming more logical than when it was first presented? Apparently, he's a rather hard working kid. His only downfall would be just how injury prone he really is. If I was BC and I would strongly consider him.

Interesting, I didn't know that. Well then. I suppose he's more comfortable passing the buck in the media.

Both Bosh & Bargnani have the talent to go further in NBA .

Bosh needs to work those neck & arm muscles and Bargnani needs to work on his back muscles too .
