Default Grange: Time's about up for Martin

I'd have to say that Martin's only value to this team is as a leader from the bench and in the lockeroom. He really has no place on this roster to play in my opinion and if BC does deal either one of our PG's he'd also better find a better back-up because we can't use Martin for more than a couple minutes every couple games.

Anyhow, on to what Grange said in his blog:

Iím not really supposed to say these things, but I like D-Mart. And I definitely respect him. He is a man of routines, which is the foundation of any successful professional. On days when heís got a chance of playing, like last night when Ford was out and on the many more days when heís got no chance, he does the same thing. Heís at the arena early and among the very first on the court, often bringing a developing young player with him. He does some skipping to warm-up and then gets into a solo shooting routine. Then heís out there for some group work and stays long after to encourage other guys. Heís always in the same mood, always upbeat. Everyone likes him and he seems to like everybody. I subscribe to the theory that he adds something to the team even if he never takes to the court.

But the problem is when he takes to the court, I donít think he can hold his own the way he has in the past. He did buy some minutes for Calderon and ran the team decently enough last night, but that was a high point so far this season. His perimeter shooting is suspect, but it doesnít stop him from shooting, and when he penetrates heís as likely to get the ball sent back to centre as to score. Heís had an amazing run for a guy with his athletic talent, but if the Raptors get in a situation where Ford or Calderon are out for an extended period, the drop-off to Martin is too steep for a team with a deep playoff run on their minds.

Nobody can really argue in favour of keeping Darrick Martin. I just think that the market for a third string PG does not exist and until Ukic come through, if at all, we'll likely be stuck with Martin.

Blaspheme!

Martin still playing is the only hope I have left that I may still make the Raptors one day.

Yeah, so what's the deal with Ukic anyways? I know ET isn't his biggest fan, but is he making any head way this season overseas? I haven't heard nor read much about him lately.

Martin might be old and slow but he ads to team in more ways then one... if Raps decide to part ways with either TJ or Jose then by all means they should go and get another PG but as a 3rd PG on the team he is OK... at least for this season for next he should get a suit and a place next to Sam on the bench... he would look good with a little blackboard and piece of chalk...

I hope they put him as a couch or samething like that. I think in the case we had some EGo problems between Calde and Tj he could help keeping the things balanced and relaxed.

3rd string???
martin wouldnt even make the cut on my pick up basketball team.
the guy is plain terrible.

he jacks up shots like its going out of style... he telegraphs all his passes.
he couldnt hit an open jumper to save his life...
he is even surprised when he hits a shot...
the guy is a waste of a roster spot, plain and simple.
they want him as a player development coach then fine, have him do that. dont have this guy waste a roster spot.

It would be better he he just sat on a couch in the players' lounge in his civies and not see the court.

Anyhoo, Ya.. his days of competing with top class talent are done. They were done last year. We all knew it and most of us were shocked he was brought back. Just more inclination that Jose ain't going anywhere.

That's good news i say!
Like how i drew the conclusion? cause the proof is there!

Who is there really that will accept the role of third string point guard? You've usually have got two options - either a young unproven guy/scrub or a veteran whose better days are behind him. Clearly the Raps have went with the latter.

That's a good question. From what I've heard he really hasn't improved THAT much. He still has a ways to go, he needs to learn to make better court decisions and his offensive game is pretty below average for an NBA basketball player. If you want a comparison to who he reminds me of, I'd say a poor man's Jason Williams. That's not a good thing.

Martin is a cool guy but I think his time is up, too ... even for a third string PG, we should give the chance to some young PG with potential!

I think too much is being made of Martin...really is having a young prospect pg rotting on the bench going to help the team or that player? Martin is low cost, low maintaince and high return in 99% of what he's used for... sure he's lost a step out on the court but he's not going to blow a game in the 5 mins he's out there. Both TJ and JOse can play 40 minutes when the other is hurt and between Parker/Delfino and Dixon we have other handlers to help DMart out. He's invaluable in the locker room, on the bench and the practice court and he's not blowing us games on the real court... leave him be for another season I say.

But that's not really the issue here. We have a starting PG, who for all intents and purposes, is an injury risk. Therefore, having a better than average third string PG, I think is quite imperative. Again, in the essence of "depth" Martin is more than a notch below and harms our overall depth.

Again, I'd bring in Ukic if need be so he could learn the NBA game and finally see what if anything he is capable of doing.

Is Ukic or any other young guy going to learn the nba game riding the bench though? With TJ and Jose healthy which is 70 of 82 games they take up all 48 mins and should... what does Roko do in those games? Complain about PT and not develop at all.

Keeping Martin is as much about keeping Martin as it is not introducing a locker-room issue and waste of money. There's no room to develop a young point guard on this team because he'll only get pt when one of Forderon is injured...that makes Martin the perfect solution.. again for 5 mpg ... again with other solid handlers on the team like Parker, Delfino and Dixon.

I understand your point, but if you see him in Europe his growth has pretty much stagnated. He may be on the bench, but at least he's on the bench with NBA players. And if he at all wants to be a player he'll listen and watch intently to what's occurring. That's where Martin can come in. Sit beside the young kid, and talk to him about the game; teach him. Play against NBA players in practice; learn the offensive schemes and defensive schemes. And if he complains about PT then well he's not a player and doesn't give a shit about this team and only himself.

Plus, as I believe that this team will be a contender in 1-2 years time, why have a player, play a key spot for this team and have no knowledge about the intracies of the NBA game?
