Grange: Rudy should come off the bench

Raptors should bring Rudy Gay off the bench - Sportsnet.ca

Quote:

Dwane Casey got the wrong guy.Taking Amir Johnson out of the starting lineup is the right message to send to a team that already plays selfishly?Removing the one Raptor who more often that not brings a full effort and plays team-first basketball is the way to encourage more of the same?
Quote:

Unlike Johnson, who took his demotion grudgingly but without overt protest, Gay indicated he wouldn’t go willingly when the subject was broached.“Me? Would I ever come off the bench?” he said, when I asked him about it. “No. I think this team needs me in the starting lineup. Maybe on a different team, maybe in the long run… But here? No
Quote:

Having Gay come off the bench would create a cascade of benefits. It would allow his shot-happy style to flourish—or at least cause the least possible damage. It would embolden DeMar DeRozan as the Raptors’ clear leader and offensive lynchpin, which he is already—or at least whenever he can wrestle the ball from Gay.

Making Ross a starter would give DeRozan some space and allow Toronto to find out if he’s an asset worth further investment. Having one less high-volume shooter in the starting five would mean Valanciunas could conceivably be a consistent part of an offensive game plan, rather than the guy charged with picking up Gay and DeRozan’s scraps.

He sounds like a real prick in that quote haha.

Just being himself.

Gay is not a team player and that quote speaks volumes about his ego. "Me? Come off the bench in Toronto? Hell no. I'd come off the bench if I was in Miami, no problem, but not Toronto."

He's not a team player.
It saddens me.

'trane 12-02-2013 02:10 PM

jeeze michael grange, don't hold anything back.

but really, this might even be impetus for gay to opt out at the end of the year. does he really want to play out the next 2 years as a role player? i like this idea a lot.

Doesn't sadden me. Pisses me off.

Would you throw $20 Million away because you're playing like a shmo? helllllo no. You never leave money on the table.

Gay like's opting in more. $19 million more. If he opts out, what will he get on the open market? 6 mill, 8 mill? The other GM's have seen his act.

really? 1 year on the bench for a losing team at $19 mil, vs 5 years on a good team at maybe $9-10 mil? if i'm rudy and i know my best years are getting a bit shorter, i'm looking to lock into something. i heard the lakers have cap space...

Really. I doubt a good team would want him, because good teams don't need to pay him $9-10, when they can spend that money so much more wisely, especially for a guy that is likely to be a third, even fourth option. He may get offers, but it may not be the kind's of teams he's want to play for.

Ligeia 12-02-2013 02:31 PM

That's so awesome. Not only did he explain why he wouldn't come off the bench, but he explained why he doesn't pass the ball: he has no respect for his teammates' ability.

I really am starting to dislike Rudy Gay.

It's approaching Andrea Bargnani levels now. We aren't quite there yet, but we are approaching that ballpark.

Fucking Rudy Gay man.

He used to be one of my favorite players. It sucks to watch him this season.

The Raptors’ season is only 16 games old, but if Gay continues at the pace he’s on it will be a historic, almost comic, monument to basketball selfishness. He’s on track to become the first player since 1958-59 to take at least 19 shots a game while shooting less than 40 percent and averaging fewer than 2.5 assists.
If he came off the bench and had some kind of success, it might give a sliver of hope that some loaded team might think about taking him on in that role.

rapsmannn 12-02-2013 03:14 PM

raptors wouldn't do it, they would de-value their own player who they hope doesn't pick up his option and becomes a free agent

all we can hope is for him to start shooting a little better, and hopefully share the ball,

even if he took 3 less shots a game, and shot a little bit higher percentage it would make a difference in making his stats look much better

He's already there for me. I absolutely hate him and hate when the ball is in his hands. At this poitn any shot that goes in for him is just a big fluke

Casey needs to do this to save his job. He kowtows to players far too much. He needs to show them he stands for something. Of course it would probably be the end of him, but he might as well go down standing on principle, even if it would be too little too late.

You know, a part of me was hoping Rudy would stay down when he got blocked by Mozgov.

Just to see how the team would function without him on the floor, and to see him ease his way back by coming off the bench.
