Grange: Resting Turk seems strange, Demar isn't VC

I have to agree about Turkoglu. I'm starting to think something is up. Not even taking the road trip?

Quote:
5. I wrote about it in the paper today, but the whole Turkoglu thing is officially seeming strange to me. How long does a 30-year-old professional athlete need to recover? It's basketball, not the Tour de France or ultra-marathoning. The NBA Finals were over June 14th. The European championships were held from Sept. 7-20. Turkey played nine 40-minute games. I accept the notion that missing the first week of training camp -- giving Turkoglu two weeks after the end of Eurobasket made some sense. But last night Turkoglu was talking vaguely about suiting up in a week from now, which would give him nearly a month off. It takes a month to recover? Really? Isn't part of the reason you're paid $10.5-million as a professional athlete to make sure you're prepared for the rigours of your job?
Quote:
4. DeMar DeRozan may very well be a good NBA player. Hes certainly diligent: he spends time before each game sitting beside development coach Eric Hughes with a laptop open going through video sequences and has earned praise from Triano for being a quick learner. But the Vince Carter comparisons made by Colangelo after the draft were overblown, even if you isolate the athleticism. Even Andre Iguodala is a stretch. DeRozan may well be able to jump, but hes had a number of chances to put guys in the basket and hes opted to lay it up so far. He kinds of shies away from contact. Early days, obviously, but attacking the rim in even the slightest traffic is something hes got to do better.

This is starting to smell like a hidden or unidentifiable injury....Though to me it doesn't seem like Colangelo's style....

Maybe he is worried he REALLY fucked up and is trying to keep everything quiet until he can find out what is wrong before he explains the mistake?

Like you'd figure he would just play 10 mins or so if he was "tired".

Whether or not DeRozan dunks it or lays it in is irrelevant. It's his jumper that he should be focusing on. Shies away from contact? I figured he'd look more like Jamario Moon than early VC anyway.

As for Turkoglu? He's hurt. He'd at least be able to take reps in practice if he were just "tired". What's tired are the excuses coming from Raptors brass.

Doug Smith already reported he had tedonitis in his one knee. Perhaps Grange should start reading his blog.

Re: DeMar

C'mon Dann, the kid is a 19 year old rookie, not a 27 year old journey man with the work ethic and smarts of a lamp shade.

I'm not saying he'll end up like Moon. Just that his contributions this year would be similiar. That's exactly my point. He's capable of doing at 19 what Moon did at 27.

Sorry buddy. Vince Carter is an NBA allstar, and a damn good player that Toronto would only be lucky to have at this point.

I have been hinting at what Grange has typed here for a month now. DeRozan isn't remotely close to Vince Carte rin athleticism. ANYONE who thinks he is needs to go back, and have a look at the rookie footage Vince gave us.

I mean fuck, watching the early games so far, I have seen very AVERAGE dunks from weems and Derozan, and we got Raptor commentators sceaming like they were massive facials.

So far, to me, Demar look slowish, sluggish, and not nearly as explosive as Vince was. His vertical is above average... by about 2-3". Thats it.

Sorry if I seem anti Derozan, I'm not, but I call um like I see um, and this kid ain't what we are building him up to be...

Absolutely. Are Raptors fans going to compare every athletic 2 guard they ever bring here to Vince? I hope not because the guy was a once in a lifetime talent. Probably the most talented basketball player I've seen in over 20 years of following this game and it's history.
DeRozan might very well become a phenomenal player, but let's let him grow into it without the unrealistic expectations. That goes for MLSE as well. Hey, marketing is great (except for that Gate 5 Live crap) but they are not exactly turning down the volume on the Demar hype machine.

One of the more talented, sure. But to say he's probably the MOST Talented over the last 20yrs is grossly exagerrated.

No it isn't

Only here in Toronto, because you dolts are still hung up on a couple bad years. Dude has had incredible numbers since he's left, and to be honest, I'd love to have him back.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the cocksucker and if he were to return to the Raptors I'd have to take another sabbatical from my fandom like I did his last year and a half here. But I think he's easily the most talented player ever to put on a pair of shoes, in terms of god-given ability.
Jordan never jumped over any 7 footers, or did 360-under-the-leg-windmill dunks.
What prevented Vince from becoming the G.O.A.T. is his lack of heart, and anything between his ears and legs.

I never got the comparison to Vince. It's wrong in so many ways, particularly to him, but then he went right along with it himself I guess.

Nicely put!!!

I'll be the first to admit that DeRozan hasn't been playing as good or as freakishly athletic as I thought he would...
He does need to bring the power game, take it hard to the hoop kid!!
I still believe that there is something special about this kid...

I have great expectations for DeRozan, and I hope I eat my words, but honestly it looks like Weems is far more athletic than he is from what I've seen at this point.

I have to say at this point DeRozan isn't playing up to his hight of 6'7" he looks shorter on the court...It is a little disapointing, I know it's only 2 games into preseason but it is what it is...& I'm the biggest 2-D supporter there is, I have been watching him since his first Youtube video in early high school...

There is no conspiracy here. I'm not worried about Turkoglu at all. Have the Raptors ever kept an injury secret? The guy played a full season last year, went to the finals while logging a lot of games and minutes and instead of taking a break in the off-season he went to play for his country. I don't think there's an injury but I do think that this is to prevent an injury. The guy needs a little rest. Have we learned nothing from seeing Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani over do it in the off-season and come the regular season struggle with injuries and fatigue? They want Hedo at 100%, he's a key piece to the success of the team this year. Ease off guys, no conspiracy here...

The thing about Derozan is he was SUPPOSED to be a bit of a project...Then he played really well in summer league and I think people forgot that.

Give him some time and let's see what he can make of himself
