Default Grange: Raptors plot out strategy for "fairly deep" draft

By all accounts so far, it would seem that if #17 is where we end up staying, that the more defensive minded Lopez twin Robin is the most likely candidate that BC takes.

However, the 15 or so players most likely under consideration at No. 17 were not in Orlando, electing to stay home rather than risk injury or a poor performance. That will make the Toronto workouts all the more important.

“I have 12, 13 or 14 names on the board that [as projected lottery picks] will probably be gone,” Colangelo said. “But then there are four or five very sound bigs and several viable wing guards to choose from. There are probably 15 to 20 very good players in the draft that will have a positive impact on their teams.”

Simple math suggests that one of those players should be available when the Raptors pick.

There seems to be a consensus within the front office that the team needs to add to its overall athleticism and, given the chance, would use the pick on a player with some toughness and rebounding ability.

Of the players being worked out this week, an obvious match is Stanford centre Robin Lopez, who will be at the Air Canada Centre tomorrow. The seven-footer is the twin brother of Brook Lopez, who is projected to go as high as third in some draft predictions based on a more polished offensive game. But Brook has fans among talent evaluators for his defensive willingness.

If Robin is the guy we draft, I wouldn't mind that one bit.

Do you guys seriously think those two will amount to anything in the league?

I don't want to sound racist, but since I am white myself, here it goes - don't we have enough white unathletic guys already? With Bargnani and Rasho already on the roster, wouldn't you want some serious black muscle and explosiveness in the front-court?

I don't think they are white (maybe they're half?) and Robin who would be available when we select is the more athletic of the two and a very gritty player.

I believe they are Latino, not that it matters. White, black, yellow or whatever, just draft the best talent available at whatever pick we have. I don't put too much stock into what colour they are.

Just to elaborate, the mom is VERY overbearing. It's like Michelle Carter x10. They seem to be nice kids, but their mom belongs on that reality show with the crazy women who think they're children will be stars.

Well, YOU try to give birth to TWO seven-footers...

if lopez is the second coming of varejao, I think it's well worth a #17 pick.
