Raptors Grange: Raps should have drafted a PG in 2009

Quote:
The 2009 draft will forever be known for Blake Griffin going first overall and for having its share of landmines (Hasheem Thabeet at No.2 anyone? Jonny Flynn at 5?) but in retrospect it yielded a bumper crop of point guards.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are riding a wave on the back of Ricky Rubio, who went sixth.

Jrue Holiday (17th), Ty Lawson (18th) and Darren Collison (20th) are leading teams that are in contention for home court advantage in the playoffs as they start for the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers, respectively.

Eric Maynor (20th) is a well-respected member of the Oklahoma City Thunder; perhaps the NBA's best team (though Maynor is injured right now). Jeff Teague (19th) is starting for the Atlanta Hawks, another team to reckon with should Al Horford be healthy.

Any of them would look good with the Raptors at the moment. Jose Calderon is playing his typical efficient game, but in today's NBA you need a slashing speedster that can get into the defense.

As well, by the time the Raptors are rebuilt it's unlikely he'll be here. At 30-years-old and with one more year (and $10 million) left on his contract it's possible -- maybe even likely -- he could be traded for a younger piece or draft pick at the deadline.

jennings, holiday and lawson are the only guys worth considering from that draft year, the others are not starter caliber.

and derozan was a more exciting prospect than both, not sure what the point of his article is other than to show that in hindsight almost every draft choice can be questioned ...

not to mention that we'll suck for a long time and we'll get plenty of chances to draft one next season.

Hindsight is 20/20, I remember we desperately needed a sg at the time. That was our weakest position.

never ever draft based on need, draft bpa.

and it was between Jrue and Demar.

But i think Wroten is going to be a special player, could be just me, but it seems like there is something there.

great handle, great court vision, very solid defender.

Snooch, it's not a guarantee that Jrue is going ot be a better player than DD yet either.... they went with a high-end potential play and Jrue was also that.... unfortunately, DD hasn't developed enough and we're stuck wondering why

as much as i like to post about demar being an average nba player, i did not say anything about Jrue being better.

In fact i think Jrue is a tweener who cant play sg right or pg right. At least you know demar is a shooting guard.

I agree.... but if I remember correctly, I think they were looking at 4 players.... Jrue, DD, JJ, and one other.... Jennings?

all I remember about that draft is being disappointing we took DeRozan. Jrue was my pick before the draft... and I was right about Lawson being the Nuggets PG of the future
There was clearly 5 NBA starting PG's in the draft

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20. With Jose at the PG spot, and with Anthony Parker being the only quality player on the wing, picking up DeMar over a PG made a lot of sense.

Honestly, none of the PGs we could have had (Jrue, Holiday, Collison, Jennings, Teague, Maynor) are franchise players. Jennings has serious talent, but he still needs a lot of work to become great, and I remember he had all those character issues (which, for the most part, seem to have been resolved, I think).

we had just signed jose to a large contract, there was no real need at the PG spot then.

Jose had just been signed to a huge deal. It would've been suicide for BC to draft a PG. That would've been saying the decision to resign Jose was so horrible that he had to be immediately replaced by a rookie. Then Jack was added in free agency (even more $$$ tied up at the PG spot).

i'm not worrying about what we did or didnt do 3 years ago...
the fact is, this coming draft will be stacked, and this is the time for us to grab a PG. when all is said and done, we may grab the best PG of the 2012 draft and we'll all be thanking our lucky stars we didnt take one in 2009.

problem is that there isn't a single pg projected to go in the lottery.

Waiters on Cuse looks real nice and he doesn't even start. Hopefully he won't declare this year. Could use another year of seasoning
