Grange: O'Neal Indifferent to Trade Talk

I must admit I was guilty and jumping the gun in thinking Jermaine's ego might be an issue once he's back in the fold again. He's been pretty classy about everything from the rumours to him playing back up to Andrea now. :appl:

Come off the bench behind Andrea Bargnani? Hey, he's all for it.

"I have no ego about that," O'Neal said.

Get traded before the NBA's Feb. 19 deadline? That's fine, too.

"If I was to get traded, God bless 'em," O'Neal said after practice yesterday. "I have a really good agent in Arn Tellum and he keeps me aware of what teams are trying to acquire me. íK And [Raptors president] Bryan Colangelo? He's my man. We have a very friendly relationship and I respect his view."

I'm kinda excited about having JO back and coming off the bench. We're back to that negligible dropoff from the second unit bigs situation we were promised in the offseason :)

if (a big if) Jermaine actually comes back and doesn't miss another large string of games, i think this team will acutally be able to make the playoffs and potentially do some damage.

Make the playoffs yes...do some damage...absurd.

I'm excited to see JO coming off the bench as well. I think that his toughness off the bench is going to be a big bonus.

Here's Feschuk's article this morning where JO says that Andrea deserves to be the starter. :)

With Andrea Bargnani averaging 22.3 points and 7.1 rebounds as a starter during O'Neal's nine-game absence, the Italian's roll will not be rocked.

Jay Triano, the Raptors interim head coach, said O'Neal volunteered to come off the bench to begin.

"He's earned the right to stay in the starting lineup," said O'Neal of Bargnani.

"I have no ego about that. Some guys would want their starting position back, but I've been out for two weeks.

"... I don't deserve the right to come back and take somebody's position that has been playing well."

O'Neal, speaking after his first full practice with the team since he injured his knee Dec.31 in Denver, said he's not sure if he'll play tonight.

It depends, he said, on how the knee reacts today in the wake of yesterday's workout.

"Obviously you guys know my history of coming back a little bit too early and kind of putting my health in harm's way, and I don't want to do that," he said.

"But I do understand the urgency of the team needing my help."

O'Neal, Bargs, Bosh is arguably the strongest front court in the East. It's hardly absurd that they might have some success in the playoffs if they're playing well.

Ex2k 01-16-2009 09:34 AM

I've been saying this for days now...

All you people were jumping the gun and sayin no way he comes off the bench, his ego is huge etc etc...

Assumptions assumptions ... tsk tsk

sixel 01-16-2009 09:37 AM

that is a good mentality that I didn't expect from him,so if he good defence we might to the playoffs

True, but when you lack a back court like we do, it makes us pretty obsolete if you ask me. :(

don't be such a killjoy. ;)

and anyways.... this team with a healthy Oneal (and a healthy Calderon) would be better suited for the playoffs IMO

Jermaine just earned respect from me on this whole issue. Let's hope the rest of the team benefits from his classy handling of his situation by playing with the same selfless desire to help.

It's much easier for Jermaine to ease into game shape if he's coming off the bench. Going back at it full speed isn't the answer, especially with his history of knee problems.

macs 01-16-2009 10:50 AM

That's great news. Hopefully, he'll still have that attitude after coming off of the bench for 5-10 games and doesn't do a 180 like TJ.

m5racer 01-16-2009 11:58 AM

Honestly we need him back. Having him or Calderon would have been what need needed to win the last 2/3 games (second boston game and bulls game) It would be nice to see oneal play some minites tongiht. But who knows.

Agreed. I've said before that I think Bosh/Bargs and JO should be used like Detroit used their 3 headed rotation in the front-court a few years ago, with Sheed, Big Ben and McDyess. I think all three of them can be interchangeable in the 4/5 rotation, with Bosh getting the bulk of his minutes at the 4, and JO and Bargs splitting the minutes at the 5, and the time where Bosh rests on the bench.

I also think there's the possibility for the Raps to do some damage. If you look at last year, the Raps almost backed into the playoffs. Using a bit of a quote from Matt Devlin, but instead of in reference to a game, I'll use the season "It's not how you start, but how you finish". The goal this year, was to stay afloat until we get to the cream-puff schedule in March April - and while the team is a bit off of the pace, I think there's a big possibility that this team can hit the playoffs on a roll. This team hasn't gelled yet, and if they do at the right time, and some injured players come back (keep in mind JO and Calderon have both missed a good chunk of time), then the Raps could finally catch their stride.

Jermaine O'Neal trade scenarios

NBA insiders list the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat as teams with playoff aspirations that could use Jermaine O'Neal's interior presence. He was averaging 15.3 points a game and 5.9 rebounds on 52.2 per cent shooting in just 29 minutes of court time in December before getting hurt. Insiders have speculated the Bulls may be able to cobble together a collection of young players. The Heat are said to be interested in trading Shawn Marion. The versatile small forward was a favorite of Bryan Colangelo's when they were together in Phoenix. Marion is in the final season of a deal paying him $17.9-million (U.S.) this year and has struggled to find his offense alongside Dwyane Wade.

the reality is that bryan will not deal JO unless a good deal comes up. Nobody knows if such a deal will be possible, so there's no point in arguing.

But what is a 'good deal'? BC traded for JO only months ago and now he is trading him.

I also think you or anyone else shouldn't jump the gun from one ore two statements before he even sets foot back on the court. T.J was saying these exact same things last season, but after a few weeks of coming off the bench he was obviously upset. Let's see how long he has to come off the bench, how long Bargs continues this play.In a couple weeks, lets say he stays healthy (big if) and Bargnani is still averaging 20+/7 and he has to continue coming off the bench and his numbers suffer because of it, then we'll see if his true feelings come to the surface.

I like what i'm hearing but let's face it, we've all heard this type of politicaly correct talk before.
