Nash is an NBA player who still wants exposure. Whether or not he's Canadian appears to be irrelevant. Deron Williams could've gone home to play, but opted for what he perceived to be a better situation for him at this time, which is shit tonnes of money.
Sure playing in Canada would garner some attention, but very little outside of Toronto because of where Basketball ranks in this county, which is somewhere between ice fishing and curling.
Nash and New York would be significantly bigger when you consider how huge the Knicks are in that city, and how much national attention they get. He's thinking like a veteran basketball player with something left in the tank.

Apparently the whole presentation to Nash was kicked off with a video of Gretzky saying he can do for basketball in canada what he did for hockey in LA (i guess make it relevent for 3yrs, not win a championship and leave). Then watch the relevency drop off!

Where does he sign....

So we should laud him for his loyalty to PHX yet not be offended that the guy has refused to play for Canada for the last 12 years and doesn't seem to want to play here?

Maybe I'm giving Nash a hard time here but I'm not sure that he really realizes the impact that he has on basketball in Canada.

And it's not even just that, he waited for other players to sign (mainly Deron Williams) who took his sweet ass time to serve his own massive ego when the whole world knew he was going to leave 20mil on the table to leave brooklyn and now 4 days into FA he still hasn't decided which kind of ties our hands on other possible moves.

Pulling out the Gretzky card and the "i'm coming home" music was the wrong approach. It dumbs it down and should have played a really small role in presenting why he should come here. And a 50yr old Gretzky saying do what i did........
Oh I'm sorry Jeff, I had no idea you were in the meeting, what else happened?

I don't know why anyone is surprised that a 2 time MVP wants to be in the best situation possible for a last-ditch effort to finally get a ring...

In NY? A team with one playoff game won in the last decade?

i don't really care about him signing with phoenix. obviously, to him it felt like the right thing to for whatever reason(s). that's fine. but i wouldn't pull out that 'impact on the sport in canada' card. I don't really think it's fair to think he should play here because of his citizenship. That's almost like giving him the guilty treatment.

Seriously why would he want to come here? To compete for 8th? Why would we want him? to delay yet another 'rebuild' or 'rebrand' for one or 2 years?

QFT. He had a chance to come here when he was a FA before signing with PHX plus he could've requested a trade to TO in the last 2 seasons when PHX wasn't doing so great. His boy Colangelo essentially did him a favour at the expense of our team by offering him that large contract.

Are you emplying that the Raptors offer a better situation for him on the court?

For a basketball and raptor superfan such as yourself, surely you can see that they are and will be a better than us next season if things remain as they are now.

The marketing and endorsement money is phenomenal in NY. Plus it helps him with his post-NBA career too if he wants to get into broadcasting, coaching, etc.

I think we are really over estimating Raptor's abilities. I don't think playing for a Canadian team is reason enough to join a team that most likely in many people's eyes won't make the playoff's. If I was in Nash's shoe, I'd much rather play in NY with Carmelo and Amare , on top of that I get to live in NYC. Let's face it, Toronto as pretty as it is, is not NYC. I mean common, I'd do Toronto over Portland and Minni, but NYC thats another story. As much as I like Bargs and DD or the maybe up and coming Val, they are not flashy Carmelo and dunk machine Amare(might be stretching this one)

1) He's a former 2-time MVP who still has something left in the tank.

2) He's one of the game's most dominant PGs who's proven that he can elevate a team's play.

3) It's a marketing dream.

We already passed on Drummond because we "didn't want to wait for him to develop".... so why WOULDN'T we try to grab Nash is we're all about winning games now?

No take a chill pill, you'll be thrilled to know we still suck. But NY is caped out for the next couple years and the mix there is awful, they'll be a playoff team no doubt but it's not like they're championship contenders. Ypu telling me that he's going there, taking less money so that he can win an extra round in the playoffs. And if he really wanted to win a championship he'd go to Miami for less money and actually you know......win a championship. The reason he wants NY imo is that he loves the city and already lives there.

I hope he gets booed just like every other star athlete that played here. He used the city as leverage to seek better offers elsewhere. He knows he's not signing here, yet he's using us to get max money. His agent probably went around spreading our offer around to other teams to get them to match it.
