Red face Grange: More on Calderon's tough night

Quote:
A few quick notes regarding my previous post regarding Calderon, based on some feedback via e-mail and the comments:

No, I donít think the Raptors should necessarily be actively trying to trade him, sit him or whatever else. When healthy the guyís track record is pretty good and for those who might argue itís been compiled mostly as a second-unit guy I would point to the long stretches he played as a starter in 2007-08 when Ford was hurt and argue his point-guard play was very close to superb. Over time, as long as heís healthy, I see no reason why Calderon wonít play at the level heís shown heís more than capable of reaching: 12-14 points and very near 50 per cent from the floor and 40 per cent from three. His assists will likely be down because Turkoglu will handle the ball more, but his efficiency will remain. Defensively heís not going to be Gary Payton, but he needs to be the best version of himself he can be. If he does that, heíll easily continue to be a good NBA point guard, if a notch below guys like Nash, Williams, Paul, etc.

As I think I made clear, the circumstances werenít in his favour: Williams was rested and sharp; Calderon was playing on the second night of a back-to-back and probably additionally spent given the first night was in Denver. Itís not that Calderon is irredeemably awful, but he was that game.

WOW rally. I think JOse is doing so much better now. His shot is getting better even though the past couple of games he has missed a ton of open shots. Even though he only had 5 points yesterday he also had 10 assists. I don't think we should be looking to trade him just yet

justizzllee you r new to the board. I agree with you, however just get used to the nonsence that goes on with this board. A player has a bad game and many want to hang him. Many come on this board only to crank fellow posters. All is in fun. We all have our favorite players on this team. Posters will back up their guy no matter what. Enjoy this board I have been here right from the start.Jose will be just fine. The strength in Jose is between his ears not like many american street ballers that grow up saying I am star . This board was ready to lynch Jack, he finally has a good game last night and he gets all the love. The funny part is that Jack played well at the 2 position at the end and not at the 1. The Jose and Jack combo was getting the thumbs down by many, it finally works and now everyone is happy . Thats the way it goes so have fun take your shots, but get ready to rebound because thats the way its played on this board.

I just want to know how he plays so far off of a guy like Chalmers at such important moments last night. Does he not think about what he would be able to do given that amount of space? Maybe he does, and he thinks he would not be overly aggressive, and so he doesn't expect his opponent to be aggressive.

I give him high marks for raising the bar on defense this season, but at the same time he has such serious lapses. Offensively he is also changing his game up pretty drastically, and I respect how he's progressed so far, but he definitely has to progress further. He needs to be able to get back to the point where a shot from anywhere is as good as a layup. Right now he is still thinking as much as just playing, and the increased effort on defense has probably taken away from the work he puts into his shot.

And speaking of layups - he simply has to stop avoiding contact at all costs when going up for a layup. Look for some damn contact and go to the line. Deron Williams came close to hurting Jose the way Horford hurt TJ. He reached and grabbed at a guy that was darting to avoid contact. Jose was pissed, but he needed to be pissed at himself. He could see a guy in front of him that was on his heels and off-balance. He could have easily initiated contact, made the basket and added the freethrow. Instead he got to shoot two after picking himself up from an uglier fall then he wanted, and maybe to some extent feared.
