FINALS Grange: MLSE Prepared To Pay Luxury Tax For Raptors 'At The Right Time'

I wonder if there really is owners out there who are not willing to go into the tax even if it gives them a great shot to win the championship..

MLSE Prepared To Pay Luxury Tax For Raptors 'At The Right Time'

The Toronto Raptors have had a far better than expected season and the sale of MLSE to Rogers and Bell 16 months ago seemingly will help sustain the success moving forward.

“We made some bold statements when I got here, and some of them are coming true, starting with TFC,” MLSE president and chief executive officer Tim Leiweke said on Tim and Sid on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Monday. “I don’t know how you can be great and aspired to be great if you don’t have high standards and goals.”

Toronto FC introduced several expensive soccer players on Monday, which is a good sign for how MLSE will also spend for the Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs.

“We’re not afraid of the luxury tax at the right time,” said Leiweke. “These owners are in it to win.”

I expect this team to be in the 80mil+ range by the 2015-16 season.

Seriously doubt that. I expect the team to be free agent players in the summer of 2015, which means they will be stuck just above the cap for that season. It would take a couple more seasons to reach the tax levels you describe.

I expect that they will be using the expirings next year to trade for players/contracts with the extra 1st rounder, use the bird rights of Lowry and Amir and never to really see much space under the cap.

They can re-sign Lowry and Amir to 9M per year each and still have max space in summer 2015.

I don't see it as a foregone conclusion that they throw that away to be able to make trades.

They can, but we likely resign PP, Lowry gets more than 9, amir is close to that, and we use the MLE and every other option to teams over the cap this summer. Its not likely we back peddle for a year this summer. MU tries to improve no matter the cost this summer. There not slow down or rebuild to get under the cap imo.

Thats all assuming he doesn't trade Lowry, which I'm resigned to the fact that's never happening this year.

As long as we don't cripple the franchise by spending as much money as the Knicks and Nets, I'll be happy with management's decision to spend a little more.

But, if they sign PP to an extension at 5M per year, they still have max cap room that summer. Add in the full MLE this summer and they still have significant cap space (12M+) in 2015.

No need to slow down or rebuild - just let the useless pieces on our team expire. Fields, Hayes, Hansbrough, Salmons (or what's left of his contract), Daye's assumed buyout, what's left of Camby's buyout - it all comes off the cap without really impacting the actual team much at all.

Then again, let's say you are right and we end up overpaying for guys. PP at 5M per year for 5 years, Lowry at 10M per year for 5 years, Amir at 9M per year for 5 years. That places their 2015-16 salaries at 10M, 8.4M and 5M respectively. Then let's say we maintain our draft slot right now (20th overall pick) for the next two years - that means rookies on deals worth 1.27M and 1.26M in summer 2015.

That means in the summer of 2015, we have DD, Lowry, 2Pat, Amir, JV, Ross, Novak, plus our two draft picks, locked in for $47.4M total. That leaves 16.4M in cap space. If we use the MLE this summer, that means we probably have our backup PG locked in as well, or possibly a bench wing player, for 5.54M more, or 52.4M total committed salary, leaving 11.3M in cap room. Moving Novak for a player who expires next year means close to max cap room. Any decrease in the pay of Lowry, Amir or 2Pat also would help. For example, Lowry signing for 45M instead of 50M would mean an additional million to work with.
