Default Grange: Marion To Get MLE Money?

Quote:
I would feel worse about this if not for the fact that the last post was Rasheed's classic take on the economy. Honestly if my fingers got lopped off in an industrial accident and that was the last post I ever typed, I'd be fine with it. One kind of funny anecdote: when I was gathering some thoughts on the topic of how the economy might impact the coming free agent class,
I suggested to Shawn Marion that there was the possibility that he might have to sign for the mid-level this summer. He looked confused. I'm not sure it has ever crossed his mind. I was talking to a scout the other night who figured Marion might be lucky to get four or five million. That might be an extreme, but as nice a player as he is at times – I'm not sure I've seen a guy make better and quicker cuts; he really has a feel for open space and his ability to get there that far exceeds the Raptors collective ability to throw passes that coincide with him being open – he is ultimately a complimentary player in my eyes. A good one, but also one who takes the odd night off and can't create his own shot to save his life.

he would be my last option if we couldnt get or trade for somebody better, but u will never be in contention with him as your best wing, unless your team is star studded and you have the ideal pg.

no way i would go over 8, and even then i cringe.

We're going to keep him and overpay for his services.

Get used to the idea.

the best thing for us to do is to re-sign marion so we can get the mle. if we can get him for 7-8 over three years, i'm down.

+1. I'd have him back for that price.

I'd be down with this. I mean, there are no real better FA options out there and the ones we'd have to trade for would cost too much in return. I'd be looking for a 2-guard in the draft.

There's pretty slim pickings in the free-agent market this summer. Marion might be the only player out there who fills Toronto's need at the 3. I can't see players exercising their ETO's in this economy. That leaves Odom and Artest, two guys unlikely to sign in TO. Acie's right. BC may have to overpay to keep Marion in the fold.

I wonder if Marion's recent improved play happened after Grange mentioned the MLE to him? Maybe Shawn realized he better get his ass in gear if he wants to get paid.

He said Marion looked confused by it, like it hadn't occured to him.

i would act that way too, like wha wha?? Im shawn fing marion baby!! haha, you dont wanna act like, yea that sounds reasonable, or then ppl know it is. But who knows, maybe marion is so egotistical he still thinks ppl will offer him 15mil, or something.

I know I rebuffed on it, and many will scoff at it, but someone to think about going forward as well might be Ben Gordon. Yeah, I know, he's undersized, but he can score and he's crazy clutch. He wants the ball in his hands down the stretch.

Gordon has to take 30 shots to get 30 points
I think he's looking to make $10+ mil a year for at least 4 years
are the Raps willing to take that commitment

I'll say this: the answer at the 2 spot for next season isn't in the draft.

I'd not be too disapointed with him either. He does some things we sorely need....defense be damned

Yup, Gordon takes a lot of shots, and 10-mil a year is a bit pricey, but I wouldn't shy away from 8-9 mil a year for 4 years. Do we have a guy who we can put on our backs for the 4th quarter? A guy who wants the ball down the stretch? Gordon has been making a living of that since he came into the league. He hit that big shot Sunday to send the game to OT. With him and Marion in the fold, and if Bosh is indeed dealt to GSW for that package that includes Biedrins and Bellinelli/Azubuike/pick, we'll have most of our roster set by the time NBA feeding frenzy otherwise known as the summer of 2010 rolls around.

If he makes over 40% of the shots from 3 and 46-47% overall, then who cares? You're gonna complain if the ball is going in the net? That's a pretty odd thing to say. Yup, I dont like it when the Raptors score either.

when we desperately need a slasher, and you spend a nice chunk on a jump shooter, on a team full of jump shooters, for a guy known to have attitude and leadership issues on an already soft mental team. I just dont like the prospect of tying up that much $ and not filling any big need or making us better defensively.

and i wouldnt go on about "making a living" being clutch, that team has been pretty bad for awhile and him being a problem and underachieving at times is a nice reason why.
