Default Grange: July in Raptorland

Quote:
Itís become a tradition, possibly more interesting than the season itself.

While in theory the point of competing in the NBA would be to play deep into June, when the conference finals are decided and the league crowns a champion, in practice thatís been as unlikely a concept in Toronto Raptors history as standing on Mars.

But give Raptors president Bryan Colangelo credit. He makes July Ė the month when NBA teams do most of their roster moves Ė absolutely compelling.

A week ago the Raptors were in a grim spot. Franchise forward Chris Bosh was heading straight for the bosom of Miami, leaving the Raptors holding Ė metaphorically Ė a bag of smelly diapers. It seemed that Toronto wasnít even going to get the benefit of a trade exception as a parting gesture for faithfulness Ė an arcane but significant asset that would allow Toronto to begin rebuilding. In any case, the roster promised to be an uninspiring and patchwork collection of talent that was overpaid, underachieving and lacking in star power.

And yet there was Colangelo nearly sneering at the idea that maybe, finally, it was time to take a few steps back to take one forward, a common refuge in the NBA where finishing poorly and shedding contracts allows teams the chance to replenish themselves with high draft picks bolstered by free-agent signings. It is not a league that rewards the middle ground.

Rebuild? Colangelo scoffed. No thanks. Iíll retool on the fly.

And so word began filtering out late Sunday night that a ďcomplexĒ deal was in the works. By midday Monday the framework had all been confirmed: out were the seemingly untradeable contracts belonging to Turkoglu and Calderon, off-loaded to Phoenix and Charlotte, respectively. In are Leandro Barbosa from the Suns and Boris Diaw and Tyson Chandler from Charlotte.
This part is for Lao Wai -

If itís July in Raptorland it must be time to remake your roster, and Colangelo has the pieces to do it. Yet after so much motion over the years leading nowhere, Raptors fans canít help but take a wait-and-see attitude before buying in again. Better this time to let Julyís work be properly evaluated come November.

I have a feeling we might have a tough 1st month again? I just hope that for once we get a somewhat favourable schedule to start the season.

I'm right your wrong plus I doubt what we have will be the final complexion of the team.
One of the differences is that Weems, DD, Amir, Davis, Albi, JJ & Dorsey are already playing in the summer league together so they will be familar with each other. Amir,Jj, Weems and DD are holdovers and know each others games.

The core player DD, Weems, JJ, Amir, Beli, & Bargs have all played together.
It much less a revamp than last year when more players were injected into the line-up.

While I'm still not a JJ fan I think him remaning gives us continuty and he seems happy and this will give him the opportunity to start.

Looking forward to the rest of the summer and hope Jose and Bosh do well in there new locations.

Currently on paper we are a better team than last year with the exception that Chris Bosh is better than our current PFs. That said only from a offensive stand point and not defensive. We are a markedly better team defensivesly with Diaw, Chandler, Amir, Dorsey and without Jose.
Currently B-Mats must be happy because Banks will see some time defensively.

Agai I doubt that this is the team you will see come October but a excellent quick remake. As in any senario some players will shine and some will disappoint. But we have quality depth at almost every position with a very athletic team. Also we have players that need and want to improve themselves all the expirings Beli, Chandler, Banks and Weems they are all fighting for jobs next year whether with the Raptors or other teams. Uncertainty about the future usually brings out the best.

Have you not realized that both those rosters were extremely flawed, and almost everyone, including the media knew that those teams were either going to be elite, or historically bad. And we were historically bad(defensively)
