Default Grange: The Grahaminator

Grange's take on Joey Graham

Quote:
1. Not much to react to regarding last night's game. Even at the best of times Twolves-Raptors in February is not exactly must-see TV. Without Bosh and Jefferson, less so. Still, draft-pick wise, the Raptors should have been able to lose this one.

2. The Joey Graham explosion is kind of interesting. I don't think it's a complete coincidence it's happened in part with Bosh and Humphries out. The more minutes Graham gets at the four the better. Not saying he should only play four, but some doses there get him more minutes and get him involved in the game in a way didn't seem to happen as easily when the Raptors were running a little less and he was getting few minutes generally and few opportunities to play from the mid-range in, where he's pretty good.

3. You know what's interesting? Is it's not really clear that Graham has improved. I can only assume that his overall focus is a little better - though I have heard Jay make references otherwise. But if you take his numbers for February: 15.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 57 per cent shooting in six games, they're not that dissimilar from his mythical - okay, exaggerating - Garbo impersonation in April of 2007, when he started and strung together the previous best six-game stretch of his career to that point, averaging 13.1 points and 3.6 rebounds on 51.6 per cent shooting in 29 minutes a game.

4. Clearly Graham is kind of a chicken-and-egg kind of player. Even his numbers this season aren't way different than his rookie-year numbers. Given some playing time as a starter in April or his rookie season he put up some decent numbers then too. Play the guy, and you get a certain kind of production. But put him in a situation where he has to compete for minutes and where his mistakes are going to be measure against his smart plays, it's kind of easy for a coach to not play him, which is what happened last season.

5. The question for the Raptors is do you re-sign Graham and for how much and for what role? There's probably a happy medium in there. But I think signing him with an eye that what he's showing now is the start of something new and he will not only continue to produce in this manner but somehow improve by leaps and bounds - overcoming his historic weaknesses and building on his new-found strengths - would be a mistake.

gotta resign Joey, he wont even be expensive and i really think he is just a late bloomer and could be a decent starter or at least great energy off the bench.

convinced that Raptors fans are only happy when they're unhappy.

I agree Ugo .... I think we can sign him to a reasonable contract and if he keeps things up I think he could even contend for the starting SF spot next season assuming we find us that SG we ever so desire.

I was thinking somewhere in the 3.5/4mil range would be good, could end up being a steal.

I'm so mixed on him right now. I like what he brings to the table some games. Then others he has a tendency to disappear. A price tag of 3.5 mill/yr for him would be fine and I'd ideally have him coming off the bench in Williamson type of role. I still don't think he's a viable starting option in this league at the SF. If anything, I think he makes Kris Humphries expendable.

I don't think this team can afford to lose him. He's one of the only players on this team right now that plays with ferocity. And after seeing the defense that he played on 'Bron and Kobe? I keep him for sure.

Hopefully we can keep him for 3-4 mill/yr.
