Default Grange: The Goods on Pops

Quote:
4. This is the issue with Pops. There is no organization more attuned to productivity and efficiency than the Houston Rockets. This is a team that can see through the fact that Chuck Hayes is tubby and short and cant score but recognize hes a defensive whiz and screen-setting expert. (Henry Abbot at Truehoop.com had some interesting Chuck facts.

5. And Pops, as we know, is nothing if productive in the minimal court time he does get. He averages 13.7 rebounds for 36 minutes for his career, after all. He averages 6.5 offensive rebounds per 36 minutes for his career. That is simply astounding. Reggie Evans, himself one of the best offensive rebounders in the NBA, averages only 4.5 pulls per 36 minutes. And yes, small sample size, but he always averages ridiculous offensive rebound numbers; and weve seen it with our own eyes.

6. So why do organizations like Dallas, Houston and San Antonio all forward thinkers let him go?

7. My sense is the guy cant run through a play to completion to save his life and his awareness and knowledge of defensive schemes may be similarly limited. Hes a terrible finisher; so all those offensive rebounds often end up missed shots; and there may also have been the sense that once his contract was guaranteed last year his ferocity diminished somewhat.

8. That said his deal is non-guaranteed until mid-December and if he can change the momentum of one quarter between now and then hes well worth the signing. The tough decision comes when Evans is finally healthy. Can a team have Reggie Evans, Amir Johnson and Pops on one roster? I say no; theres not enough bricks to go around.

Yeah, I think Kapono would have been really effective this year.

His quick 3's from the corner off of a pass from Turk or Calderon would have been huge. I mean Belinelli can shoot too, but he cuts a lot so he isn't always open in the corners like J-killa.

What a load of bull
Belinelli is miles better than JK (read: no travels, can handle the ball and distribute and is decent on D)

Problem is, all three (four if you count Bosh) are great rebounders but not good defenders. Undersized and low IQ

Imagine having Beli/Kapono/Hedo/Bosh/Bargs lol. No D, but insanely strong offensively.

I disagree. Kapono didn't work in this system. The only time he's effective is when he's wide open, set and ready for the pass. He's a mediocre player that is overrated due to his shooting efficiency. He doesn't take bad shots and that's smart but when he's not getting good looks what use is he to a team? You can place it on Sam Mitchell's shoulder that he didn't get more looks but at the end of the day you can't run the offense around getting Kapono open shots. He posted good numbers in Miami because they had two guys drawing the double team. He was naturally left open from time to time there. Miami didn't run plays for him.

The problem with Kapono was he wouldn't shoot the 3 which was why we brought the guy here. He would so often step inside the line and shoot a contested two because he gave the defense time to react. He was a huge waste of money. I would have rather kept Mo then that piece of crap.

Pops numbers are inflated because he never plays against tier one players. Heck. I can grab rebounds in garbage time.

I'd like to see him improve his "Rodman-ness". Grab rebounds ONLY and kick it out to the shooters.

Really? Kapono was useless at times but at least he was efficient. Mo has been useless and inefficient. Mo was done when he left Toronto.

Mo was done before he left Toronto.... always was overrated and I hated how commentators always need to label one guy as a defensive stopper... before Parker it was Mo, and both played soft, soft defence.

As for Pops, this article is bang on... the guy looks like he is doing more than he really is... educated X and O guys can recognize it...

Pops is garbage. I said it before I'd prefer the empty seat. I'm glad to hear the deal is non guarenteed so I can book a non guarenteed flight to somewhere in england for him.

We dont' need him we already have enough below talent players on this team

Yeah definitely, don't see him lasting past mid-december. Everything he can do Amir and Reggie can do better.
