Raptors Grange: Colangelo leaving means change is coming

Quote:
The clearest signal yet that major change is coming to the Toronto Raptors arrived by way of an email announcing the departure of Bryan Colangelo.

There have been significant developments since Masai Ujiri took over the reigns of the basketball operation from Colangelo on June 4th, with Colangelo in theory comforted with the title of president of team and business operations and the promise that his basketball acumen would be valued around the Air Canada Centre, even if it wasn’t the first and last word it was before.

A month into a job he never really wanted Colangelo realized he was not going to have a major role to play and furthermore the team was going to take a hard left turn from the path he had them on. Faced with being a bit player — as his handiwork was being undone all around him — he took a deep breath and said, basically, ‘I’m out.’

He was classy about it:“He handled this with grace,” MLSE president and chief executive officer Tim Leiweke told
Sportsnet. “I appreciate what he’s done for the club and I know this wasn’t easy for him.”What wasn’t easy was recognizing that the organization he built was being transformed in spite of him; like one of those fancy, modern condominiums that spring up around a historic building.

In his first month on the job Ujiri, the former Denver Nuggets executive has hardly sat still, but he’s yet to fully telegraph what the Raptors are going to look like on his watch.Still, the bones of a new basketball management staff are in place, with Ujiri building his own lean team that he can rely on as he tries turn the Raptors from one of the NBA’s weakerthans into a robust operation that can win championships, the club’s very public and unequivocal mandate under Leiweke.Ujiri has fired long-time scouts and dismissed fan favourites in Alvin Williams. He’s thrown his weight behind Dwane Casey as head coach and has been burrowed into his phone the past 48 hours trying to get the Raptors a draft pick they can use Thursday night. And he’s done it all with minimal input from Colangelo, according to sources. But exactly which direction the team might be headed in has been closely held. Was he blowing it up? Was he going to try and stay the course and see if a few tweaks could get the Colangelo-assembled core into the post-season for the first time in five years?

We'll know by the end of today what direction Ujiri is heading in. If he wants to build for the future, today would be the day to start.

Should be fun to see what happens ...

Good luck to BC ... it's better for him and organization that he leaves. It's tough to sit there and see someone not only tell you your baby is ugly, but I'm also going to throw it out. Happens all the time in business and people usually leave if they have options. No surprise.

Big change is coming. With the team BC had assembled, he thought a few tweaks were needed to become a playoff-calibre team. With these Lowry rumors, maybe its a sign that big changes are happening to the roster. Masai eliminated the assistant coaches, fired long-time scouts like Kelly and fan favorite Alvin Williams. A difference of opinion where the team is headed between BC and Masai, BC resigns. You don't quit your new job in a few weeks.

It's not about the money with these guys, it's about the power.

Don't be surprised if Raptors get into the draft tonight. Ujiri looking to overhaul and needs assets. All but JV in play is my guess.

Derozan to Min for 9, 26 and Barea

Gay and Top 10 protected pick to Cle for 1 and Thompson

Lowry and Bargs to Utah for 14 and 21

That is my dream scenario tonight.

I wont be shocked when we likely make 0 moves tonight. I'm too used to nothing happening on draft night. Hopefully it changes tonight, but I wont hold my breathe

I think Mlse wants to be very public about the organizational change, so I see them looking to be high profile tonight. We shall see.

Bc leaving was garanted when MU took over.

Now about the change, we have o wait and see what happen between today and in 3 weeks.
I think before july 15th, we will have a good view of our roster for next season !

why would we trade strong pieces for multiple picks in a supposed really shitty draft. outside of that cleveland trade we're on the absolute losing end of each and every other proposed

We win the Minny deal in a landslide.

We win them all in a landslide. And it is only because of the perceived weakness of this draft that these deals are not completely outrageous. Even weak drafts have good players in them - if you have faith in your scouting, you always, ALWAYS, look to get into a draft, especially when the price is low.
