Grange on Raptors: Bryan's work already done - sportsnet.ca

Quote:
While the talk of moving Bargnani to Chicago for Carlos Boozer was real, it's easy to see why the Raptors didn't pursue it with much vigour, even if word around the NBA is that Leon Rose, Bargnani's agent, has been leaning heavily on the Raptors to free up his client.

Bringing back the Chicago power forward would add an additional $4 million to the Raptors payroll in 2013-14 and nearly $5 million the following year compared to the $23 million owed Bargnani.

With Gay already on the books for $37.2 million the next two seasons and the league's harsher luxury-tax penalties poised to kick in -- not to mention the logjam Boozer might create with respect to Jonas Valanciunas and Amir Johnson -- it was an easy 'No' for Toronto, regardless of what Boozer may or may not provide.

At the moment, word from those close to the team is that Bargnani's status has hardly been a distraction and that with Gay in the fold, DeMar DeRozan thriving -- his scoring average, minutes played and assists are all up in eight games alongside his new teammate -- and point guard Kyle Lowry finding a comfort zone with Jose Calderon gone, there is little incentive for Colangelo to do anything.

In many ways, Colangelo's in a decent position even if he is heading into the option year of his contract with a team that was five games out of a playoff spot with just 28 to play heading into Wednesday's game against Gay's old team, the Memphis Grizzlies.

If the current trend continues -- 6-2 with Gay in the lineup and 18-13 since the club's disastrous 4-19 start -- the club will miss the playoffs fractionally and thus turnover the lowest possible value to Oklahoma City (via the Houston Rockets) for the Lowry trade: A late lottery in what is being deemed a historically weak draft.

Meanwhile, Colangelo will be able to point the MLSE board to the success the team had following an anomalous start and in particular the momentum built after the signature acquisition of Gay and make a case that they exercise the option year on his contract or offer him an extension.

It is then that the real work will begin, with all kinds of options available. The possible field for trading Bargnani will likely broaden and the Raptors will have some clarity on if they want to double-down in building around Gay and how they might plan to do that or if Colangelo is the man for the job. Dead weight like Linas Kleiza could be amnestied and Bargnani, for all his mixed history in Toronto, might prove to be a reasonable candidate as a third or fourth option in a bench role.

In the meantime the Raptors, having done their work early, can approach Thursday's deadline with a sense of calm, rather than anxiety.

While this might be true, that doesn't mean that we won't see any further movements. I'm sure we'll all still be glued to our computers until the 22nd.

"Leon Rose, Bargnani's agent, has been leaning heavily on the Raptors to free up his client"

Bargnani wants to move? Or is he happy as a third or 4th option? It is a pretty toxic atmosphere at the ACC when he steps on the floor.

Grange is right on, IMO. Also, for years now, I've considered him the best basketball writer in TO, by far.

I am sure Bargs wants to be moved. If a plyoff team like the Bulls wants you in return for Boozer, while here you are no longer being welcomed and struggle to get some playing time, off the bench even... The writing is on the wall.

He's checked out... it's almost as if he has been told he'll be moved and he doesn't have to worry about it. He's not getting touches, he's not having any plays run for him, he's standing as a floor spacer in three point land endlessly and not doing anything to change things.... we need to just bite the bullet and move him for boozer. This reeks of a lack of professionalism from all parties involved.

If BC has a deal on the table for Bargs and ownership is willing to go into the tax there's no reason a trade SHOULDN'T be done.

With playoffs becoming more and more unlikely, I don't see a reason to put us in a tough financial position for the sake of getting rid of Bargs. Believe me I want Bargs gone as much as the next guy but I from the rumoured deals I don't see a trade that helps us a ton.

Yes ownership is willing to go into the tax, but we need to be smart about it.

This..

He's def checked out, it's like he's been told go out there for 20 min and space the floor, and defend the big man.

Def would be better for all parties if he was just moved now.

Today should be an interesting day!

Boozer offer still there/??

More and more unlikely? It's not like PHI and MIL are setting the world on fire...

We're talking about having him for the rest of this year and next year for sure... and then he'd be a big-ass expiring contract to dangle IF things weren't working out with him.

I don't see how you can watch these guys come in and destroy our team on a semi-nightly basis (West, Cousins, Zach, Aldridge) and not think about snagging one of them.

We're certainly not going to get a big of Boozer's calibre via FA.

I wouldn't go into tax luxury for Boozer this season. I'm just not sold on him as a player, and I probably never will be at this stage. I'm also thinking a little long-term. This team will not win a round in the playoffs this year. They may or may not even make the playoffs. If you trade for Boozer, you go into the tax this season for what? Now you have entered the tax for the first time, and future seasons in the tax will become more punitive. Yet it is in the future seasons that you expect this team to be most successful!

If the owners are willing to pay any possible tax bill, then it's a slightly different story though the restrictions on player movement that come from such a financial situation are also a little disconcerting.

its kind of because all the bigs should significant progress but him this year
Ed improved enough that his value shot up for us to trade him for something significant
Amir looks like he's past his major foul problems for the most part and his shot is back and improved passing and consistent hustle has made him the most valuable big on the team
and JV has shown more ability and skill on the floor than probably most expected
even gray has a defined role on the team that nobody else can really take over and that is to guard the big post player on the opposing team
so that left Bargs to compete against basically every big on the team for minutes and that he has to prove his worth on the floor because all the other bigs are pushing for his minutes and are showing they deserve some, and instead Bargs has regressed and proven his minutes can be taken away
they need to forget about him and get on with their lives, trade the guy for whatever is decent and get on with it, who even cares if he becomes that good player again, its not going to happen here, so unless we want to waste a roster spot and salary to keep a guy from being good on another team we're just screwing ourselves
