Grange: Bargnani, the door is to your left

Quote:

With the Toronto Raptors season over and the franchise’s future almost never more uncertain, the question begins in earnest: Is Andrea Bargnani worth it?

The No.1 pick in the NBA draft has played five full seasons and proven himself --- without debate this time -- to be what he’s always been: an enigma.

This season his usage rate (the amount of time he had the ball in his hands) increased, his minutes increased and his scoring increased. But in his first opportunity to be the primary option for an NBA team he regressed, and don’t forget, offense is supposed to be his strength.

The spike in scoring – from 17.2 points a game to 21.4 a game; (second among centres in the NBA his dwindling supporters would tell you) – came from more trips to the free throw line (a career-high 5.3 per game) and more shots (his 17.8 attempts from the floor more than Chris Bosh ever took in his career, or ever will, now that he's in Miami) but obscured his decline in every rebounding measure, in blocked shots, in shooting percentage and an increase in turnovers.

With more opportunities, Bargnani scored more and did everything else less except give it away.

The only argument in his favour; the only thing that prevents him from being an albatross is that he is paid relatively affordably, by NBA standards, his four-year, $42-million contract not the kind of number that will have rival teams hanging up the phone
Quote:

Moving Bargnani is not a core strategy, according the NBA sources; but it's been discussed and there's a sense that Bargnani's potential and his pay cheque would have other teams on the phone in significant numbers. "There are 29 other teams out there who think they could help them," said one source.

Which is why the most important move Bryan Colangelo – or whoever ends up running the Raptors for whatever ownership group is in place – can make is trade the player he drafted as a bigger, more athletic Dirk Nowitzki.

Quote:

Even at 25 the five-year veteran centre who struggles as an offensive player, let alone a defensive one (Triano referred to him as a ‘good’ on-the-ball defender. Help side? Bargnani’s guess is as good as yours) doesn’t fit on a team heading for another year of rebuilding.

No way. After all, whatever Bargnani’s potential might be, it’s clear he’s got no Nowitzki-like upside.

I guess we better get comfy in this tank.

Is it just me or does anyone else get the feeling that if Bargnani is back next season, that it will get very ugly. As in him getting booed on most nights, and everyone turning on him until he's dealt.

I don't dislike him to the point where I'd boo him he doesn't deserve to be boo'ed he's just clueless, and if he's not dealt or used off the bench so is the management.

I think it's just you lol...the only time fans get really pissed is when the Raps score 99 points.

LOLL "7-1 Jamal Crawford", but I swear Bargs is 7 ft.

Raptors_ 04-14-2011 08:27 PM

if we start losing again, im going to go to the game just to boo him until BC trades him. This is just ridiculous, just learn how to play fckin defence its not rocket science. All he has to do is get in the gym for a few hours everyday and practice on defence.

idk why he doesn't have the heart to shut people down. He doesn't look like he is very intent on dominating the paint

hahaha, Trade them!

They have to stop that promo because pizza is ruining the ACC atmosphere at the end of games, it's a slice of pizza for God's sake.

And a piss poor slice at that.

Admiral 04-14-2011 11:08 PM

they can keep the pizza, just make it like a keep the opponent's total below 100 or 90 or something like that

rochi 04-15-2011 11:10 AM

i honestly think that someone should work with bargs like hakeem worked with howard this past summer, but more on the defensive end. i know ppl will say no matter who works with bargs that nothing will change, but i think its worth a try

creative1mm 04-15-2011 11:22 AM

why can't he just camp in the post..
he really does not like physical play aye..

Yes, the usual, "Fuck, we lost again..." is quite the atmosphere.

I hope Bargnani finds the door and walks away. I'm sure if he gets on a team that is fighting for something and where he is not the go to guy he will blossom and if he has a good defensive minded center he will show his strenght.

He's 7 foot 1 and 260 pounds. How the hell is he going to guard power forwards? Power forwards will eat him alive.

archie63 04-15-2011 12:58 PM

22 wins (some of this due to Bargs) and all the blame on him. It seem like we have 10 lock down defenders and The worst defender in the world that destriies all the good job done.
On a side note, i guess next yearm with bargs gone, this forum will have less than a half threads

bargs better be gone next season

I don't see a point in why Bargnani should be booed. Not like that will give him more motivation to play harder on defence and on the board. That might even make him lose interest and not even bother scoring...

Bu I really think someone should work with him like the way Dwight did

Ataf 04-15-2011 10:16 PM

I lose respect to anyone who boos him, I don't get what people were expecting him to be an anchor on D? cmon, he aint dat... He had a year of the NO.1 option failed it, so we trade him? Slide him to something he got comfortable at, no2 ? no 3? He doesn't NEED to be dealt with, if we can surround him better we can move him at PF position off the bench or starting... depends who is at the 5 spot, if it's a defensive scrub, he should start (not crazy mins, but yea to balance D and O) His contract is awesome, don't mind to keep him till his final year, or till his contract is due. He isn't a C, we keep him there, he said he's a PF. Yet the franchice, keep him there... How's it his fault... There is no C. I get he doesn't gaurd them, but the fffuuu is ED or Amir goin to do gaurdin Cs? His lazy energy, however needs to be dealt with sittin him down when appropriate. Coach can't do tht? fire him?
