Raptors Grading the Deal: Rudy Gay Trade

Grading The Deal Rudy Gay Traded To Raptors - RealGM

Interesting take the trade. Points out the redundancy of having DD and Gay who have similar skill sets but what does everyone think about it? Think the Raptors could have scored better. Hopefully BC isn't done with trade talks and options

I agree about Derozan playing next to Gay. I would seriously look to package Derozan with Bargnani. The grade itself is absolutel absurd.

The demar extension does look stupid now. It should never had been made in the first place. It should have been looked at closer to the deadline.

I agree, He needs to be moved, packaged with Bargnani for a starting PF.

And no not Josh Smith... chucker who wants a max contract. no fucking thanks!

I think the grade is ridiculous. But the exact grade will depend on what happens next. Like jeffb said above, it's package time.

If you turn DeRozan + picks/pieces into another vet that helps now, preferably a very good big, it's A+.

If not, it's lower.

I'll give it till August. I think a sign and trade could be very likely. A ton of quality young-ish bigs entering free agency this summer and their teams could use DeRozan.

Josh Smith is probably better to target in July once he faces the reality and receives no max offers from anyone. That said, he's a tough player with good D, and a Lowry-Ross-Gay-Smith-Jonas lineup could really fly up and down the court and defend for the next 5 years at least. They'd cause serious issues for any team.

But DD has a 40 mln. contract and he would want to be starter right away, same as bargs. I would totally agree moving DD and moving Ross to the start, but to do that we would need a 3 team deal to make this happen.

Besides, L.Fields could fill the SG and maybe would be mor comfortable to play sg than sf.

Gay and DD aren't redundant. Look at Miami. They went out and spent on Miller, Battier and Allen when they have Wade and Lebron. This is horseshit. Tired of hearing it. Gay is much more of a smooth scorer than DD, who is more of a grinder. THey're very different. People just buy into the rhetoric.

K I think everyone in the world has had their opinion on this trade, can we stop making 300 threads about it... come on now... We get it, some hate it some love, fuck you people never give up on having the same debates over and over.

We have like 6 topics with the same debate going on, and the same points being made by the same people over and over, how do you people have fun taking part in this non-stop shit.

I think the grades are correct.
You marry away your oldest ugliest daughter first! We should've concentrated on trading Bargs and Fields, so Jose could've been used as a candy there.
Now, we've given away our two starters, who'll take dead wood off our hands?

It's imposibru to grade the trade as the new teams haven't even played yet. Still too many unknowns to say how it all will pan out.

Meanwhile

Miami is hardly comparable. They have two brilliant guys who are near-perfect. They can each do nearly everything, play any type of role and style. Wade wasn't a great outside shooter so they've been adding some shooting help. But really that's adding pieces on top of a pairing that has no serious holes.

With DeRozan/Gay, you have a ton of similarities and shared weaknesses. It makes more sense to trade DeRozan and get help elsewhere, fill bigger holes, spend that money wiser.

they are and they arent. Did they need Miller, Battier AND Ray Allen with two stud wings already? Miller, Battier and Ray Allen are all better than our wings except now for Gay. An argument can be made for DD, but an argument can be made against him too.

i don't think they set out with a plan to sign Miller, Battier and Ray, though. They signed Miller, he instantly got injured and has been a scrub ever since. A few nice playoff games but you can't rely on him because of his back. They'll probably amnesty him this summer.
So they added Battier. Nice shooter, nice defender. Injured again. Really bad for most of last year but useful at the end of the playoffs. But they couldn't rely on that to happen again.
So they added Ray Allen. Brilliant shooting so far, healthy. But his D has deteriorated so much that it's starting to look like a problem. In another year or two they might have to look for another shooter.

I think that DD is a nice player and there's no need to trade him for nothing. But there are bigger needs and much better ways to spend that money. He's very expendable for the Raptors but I think there are teams that could really use him.

The most important thing is that we are likely in a position to win more games at the end of the day. We also don't exactly cripple ourselves for our future growth as we keep our main prospects DeRozan, Ross, Val. We have someone who can win a game for us, which we have lacked since Bosh. People are gonna be happy and unhappy, but if we begin to be a more consistent winner then everyone is going to love this. We just have to see how it plays out. I tend to believe this will end up working out in our favour.

I'd give it a much high grade then a fucking D+! Are you kidding me? Not hard to tell the guy who wrote that article is a Grizz fan.

At least a B, maybe even an A- if Gay plays well. The only minuses are losing Davis and paying him more then he deserves. But as Raptors fans, I think we're plenty accustomed to the latter.

Miller, Battier and Allen are role players now at the end of their careers, so you're comparing apples to oranges.

if gay was on our team yesterday we would have won. and the other 1000000000000000 close games too, or at least a good fraction of them

Like Kenny Smith said, if we start the season with this roster with Gay we're a playoff team. He said top 4-5 which is a major stretch. But at the very least we're probably .500
