Raptors Gherardini to be replaced?

Kind of surprising.

In other NBA front office news, the Raptors are assembling a list of candidates to work alongside assistant general manager Marc Eversley under team president Bryan Colangelo. Toronto is believed to be seeking someone with international scouting experience to replace Maurizio Gherardini, whose contract expires June 30.

Gherardini was the mentor and biggest supporter for Bargnani. With failure of the Bargnani experiment, maybe we can send both to a warmer climate.

Wasn't Gherardini supposed to be like the GM for the Nets? Maybe he already has a contract in place with them.

Maurizio is the reason why we made the playoffs in 06-07 & 07-08 Re: the good players we signed in summer 2006.

Bryan is the reason our franchise has been miserable ever since. And we would've been better in our playoff years w/o his moves of re-upping Smitch when everyone clearly hated him; and getting Jason Kapono over re-upping MoPete, which was the beginning of the end of our time making any sort of defensive impact (not totally knockin Jason, who is a solid team defender, but MoPete is that and one hell of a man defender, who was also the locker room leader).

He wasn't a bad defender, but by the time he went to NO he had slowed considerably.

Ok sorry I agree he wasn't a bad defendor but to say his man to man d skills were anywhere near lockdown would be a far fetched illusion. But yeah I would agree he was okaaay

Yeah really homeboy. If you got the time to dig in the archives, you'll see I'm 100% bang on correct on this.

-It all started in 01-02, when we won 12 out of 14 (beginning w/Vince's season ending injury) to sneak into the playoffs, w/MoPete anchoring our perimeter D and often being our best scorer, culminating unto shutting down Jerry Stackhouse in the deciding gm5 vs the Pistons, which we would've won if not for dumb ass Lenny Wilkens subbing MoPete out for Dell Curry (I agree w/Dell coming in that game, but MoPete should've stayed in for defense; I remember being very angry at this), and then Jerry heating up thereafter unto us losing by 3pts.

Morris Peterson - Charlotte Bobcats - Game Log - NBA - Yahoo! Canada Sports
Feel free to check out the boxscores from the link here, and how the oppositions best wing player fared w/MoPete on'em.

-Check out MoPete's stellar man defense on Kobe in our W's vs. LAL on Feb 27th 2005 (Jalen was on him for most of that game, but we pulled it out in the end when MoPete came on him for the last few minutes) and Feb 9th 2007 (all of him, AP, Joey & Garbo matched up against him, but MoPete carried most of the defensive load on him that game, and even hit the shot which was eventually the gm-breaker).

-Did the same thing vs. Lebitch on Mar 20th 2005; Jalen was matching up for the most part unto Lebitch having his career high, then MoPete started guarding him late in the game, and we pulled out the W. He was also our best guy to put on Lebitch thereafter since then.

-He did as good of a job as anyone in the league on Vince when they were in their 20s (and thus also the same vs Kobe n Lebitch; also gave Lebitch fits when he was having a good game w/his shot).

-Numerous other primary scoring wing players he played as well as anyone could play on them. I should note that he did it all while not at all being a dirty player or a flopper. MoPete is as tough as they come.

-He as NOH's perimeter anchor on D when they had thier best playoff run in 2008.

Really, MoPete is the same guy who helped Anthony Parker develop into the defensive stalwart that he is and is still recognized as today. The only difference in their games is that MoPete's primary scoring came off of screens (like Reggie Miller & Rip Hamilton) whereas Anthony is more refined in gettin his shot off the bounce. And MoPete was a perrenial 82-gamer until an elbow injury took him out (think about it -all elbow's need are a few days rest). W/all that in mind, seeing MoPete's game is pretty much twins w/AP (whom he helped in NBA fundamentals & training for the long season), the only plausible reason MoPete doesn't get the burn & respect that AP gets is due to NBA politics (or politricks), or more tame youth movements.

He would've been awsome both as a player for us in 10-11 and mentor to Demar, Sonny etc. if we got him this year. But that would've blatantly made Bryan look bad for letting him go, so it didn't happen. Cheers.

Mo Pete showed up out of shape every year at training camp, never learned to use his right hand at all, couldn't dribble the ball more than four times without turning it over, and played average D that looked better than it did because he played on a team of pylons.

AP was already a good player on both ends when he came to Toronto from Israel. It had nothing to do with Mo Pete

Only if you believe that fuckwad Kevin O'Neill, who didn't play anyone except Vince and Donyell to their strengths. And then the reputation carried over to Smitch, who was an even worse coach who'd play MoPete for 40+ consecutive minutes only to pull him out of the last 5 in a close game despite MoPete showing no signs of wearing down. MoPete even said after KO accused him of that, he'd make sure it'd never happen again.

Unless of course you believe he managed to play 82gms 4yrs in a row w/o coming into camp in shape.

MoPete has the same impact defensively as Anthony Parker and offered the same leadership as well (And were the 2008 Hornets pylons too? He was D'ing up hard on Kobe w/them as well). W/that in mind + MoPete being an 82gamer in mind + Anthony only missing 22gms in 5yrs, I reckon MoPete taught'em how to prepare for the NBA grind. IIRC AP even said as much once during an after-practice media scrum in 06-07.

We had a great future if we kept both of them with us and simply got rid of Smitch (and hindsight being 20-20, Bryan as well).

BladeofBG:

I liked Peterson. I thought he was a good players who served this team well even though he had his deficiencies (and YES one of those was not being in the best of shape at the start of the season), but if you think that Morris Peterson had some profound influence on Anthony Parker's game then i think you are reading too much into one or two comments you may have heard a few years ago. Dude. Parker was the best player outside of the NBA for years. He was established defensively and offensively and was already good at those things before he ever put on a Raptors uniform. Maybe Mo offered some advise to him, but you know what probably every player gives every other player some advise at some point when they are on the same team.
