The future for Bayless in toronto?

Toronto already extended / picked up options on James Johnson, Ed Davis, and DeMar DeRozan last summer (June) Ė prior to the start of the NBA lockout. But the club did not offer a contract extension to guard, Jerryd Bayless.

Though the Raptors let the Wednesday deadline come and go without putting forth a deal for Bayless, that doesnít necessarily mean that the Arizona product is done in T.O.

In fact, my hunch would be that this could be more of a ďfinancial moveĒ, for now.

By not extending Bayless the Raptors will save themselves more salary cap / flexibility for this coming off-season. Plus, when the regular season ends they could still put in a qualifying offer for Bayless before June 30 and, thus, make him a restricted free agent (essentially, Toronto would have the right to match any offer for him that might come from another team) or they could sign him to a new contract, as a free agent, when the sweepstakes begin after July 1.

Honestly, i don't see a bright future for Bayless.
His PG skills are very mediocre at best, everything he does is shoot those jumpers. I don't think he can do a slightest good impact on team's play, except maybe occasionally, when he can hit some shots. But we have other people who can do it better...
I don't care if they let him go..
I hope we draft a good PG and keep jose as a safe substitute.

Last night, he replaced Calderon, threw up a Brick, then jogged back on defence, all that within a minute, and Casey yanked him for Forbes.

No extension offer for Bayless
from Doug Smith's blog

Wednesday was the deadline for offering early contract extensions for players taken in the 2008 draft. Thereís some stuff in Nothing But Net about it but the connection to Toronto is that the HOTH had no interest, really, in doing anything with their only graduate of that class, Jerryd Bayless.

Makes entire sense and Iím glad Bryan resisted any urge to tie up even a few million dollars of his financial flexibility with a longer-term deal.

Thatís not say Jerryd isnít a good and serviceable member of this team or that he wonít get consideration to come back but youíre going to be able to get him for the same money in the summer as you would have this week and it makes entire sense to sit back and wait to see what unfolds.

Its going to be good summer for free agents. Keep the money available. Why settle on a average girlfriend now, when there will be better girls in the summertime.

We already knew this

Just keeping options open for free agent summer

I've always liked Andre Miller. With Lawson starting, I could seem him looking to move. I know he doesn't fit with the "build young" strategy, but I think he still has gas in the tank.

MikeToronto 01-27-2012 02:07 PM

I see no point in keeping him. Never saw, really. Pun intended.

Admiral 01-27-2012 05:17 PM

guy does not appear to have any 1 skill he's good at, there's been zero improvement in his game, and he's been in the league for a while, he's had plenty of chances to prove himself and enough time to improve his game
he has average off the bench PG written all over him

carp 01-27-2012 05:23 PM

In 15 years, Bayless could very well be and have done what Anthony Carter was and did in his career.

Dark Knight 01-27-2012 07:27 PM

I remember hearing Matt and Jack comparing Bayless to a young Chauncey Billups, which I would agree is probably pretty accurate.
